Artist James Bridle calls them "Rainbow planes" and has used this in his art. Rainbow Plane 002: Kiev. October 29, 2014: https://booktwo.org/notebook/rainbow-plane-002-kiev/ Rainbow Planes: https://www.flickr.com/photos/stml/sets/72157637938061015/
Reminds me of when Russia tried to blame Ukraine for downing the MH17 by producing a satellite image of the plane being chased by a jet fighter and even capturing the moment of launching the missile. Of course none of the moving objects had any sign of the color shifting. https://nationalpost.com/news/russian-satellite-image-of-mh1...

#352Potentially dumb question - how do people even find these things???

#353These are the sort of posts I can do without. It's like the stuff that goes to the top of reddit. Reddit has a way to keep frontpage of your home page for a reason.
Re: Stealth bomber in flight on Google Maps
#354Interesting how the three separate R/G/B images are taken independently a few ~seconds~ milliseconds apart, with a different color filter placed over the image sensor. I assume this is to maximize resolution, since no Bayer interpolation [0] is needed to demosaic the output of a traditional image sensor that integrates the color filters onto the sensor pixels themselves. As these satellites are not intended to photog…

Learning things becomes much harder when you are older. Our brains are physically less receptive to the process of learning.
I don’t think this is true. I think responsibilities pile up and/or the need to learn more is less. The physical ability to learn is probably hardly impacted.

#356Offtopic, it takes me 6 clicks to access google maps (click to “customize” privacy options, select “off” three times, “continue”, and “use web” when asked about downloading an app). I’m on iOS and use safari in private mode. How are others dealing with this? Do you accept the terms or do you do something different?
The way I “deal with this” is that I have a work Google account which I've signed into. With that in place, the link just opens. Obviously I have clicked "I accept" on a variety of forms saying Google is allowed to track my activity as they see fit.
I guess you can run a browser without ad blocking and the link will open after accepting the terms. However, I prefer to still block ads even in private mode for various reasons.

This is still the case today. See for example this military base in France: https://goo.gl/maps/gRLEBcCQB9CCx8Au6
Why does _france_ need to hide their millitary bases? I mean, France?
These aren’t hand-me-down US warheads on the back of a missile truck: the flagship of the French navy is a 40,000 tonne nuclear armed, nuclear powered aircraft carrier floating above a strategic submarine fleet that can destroy the world.

And embassies in foreign lands are usually very well defended against bomb raids?
Large foreign capital cities usually have thick air defense "umbrellas".

What an awful picture of the NRO Director. Surely they have plenty of experience in photography in less than ideal conditions. So why have this photo as the first thing I can see on their website?
It’s so bad it seems unlikely it isn’t a joke. I mean look at their mission patches: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NRO_launches
