Where are these bins full of ASICs?

https://www.ebay.com/b/Virtual-Currency-Miners/179171/bn_164... Once a year or so I check on the prices of used miners to see if it would be reasonable to use one as a space heater. Payback period has never been low enough for me to be comfortable with it. (If you buy $300 of equipment and mining becomes illegal tomorrow, then those miners are worthless.)

Not entirely worthless, given you’ve already sunk the cost they’d still be an effective space heater.

mining will never be illegal. at best it will be heavily taxed as a discouragement. doesn't matter, though; just buy a space heater if you want a space heater.

Come again? It's already happened: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/24/business/china-cryptocurr...

well I apologize for not knowing all laws across the world.

clearly I am unfit to be part of the blockchain discussion given that my knowledge of mining laws is not entirely complete and fully up to date.

forgive me senpai!

by the way, all (all) blockchain and NFT stuff are complete and total scams and one should kick the scammers between the legs, hard, whenever they are encountered in daily life... if you wanted to know my true opinion on this.

Does this shift the balance between TSMC and Samsung and Intel? Or is it copyable? How soon could it be in production?

IBM are slightly weird in that they do ground breaking research and pump out some genuinely impressive products but then they don't seem particularly bothered selling these products to anyone with anything less than a board of directors.

how do we cool all of the layers though? with single layer it’s easy, we just need to cover the top surface. With a 3d structure how can we do it efficiently? micro fluids ?

That could be part of the reason why 85% drop in power consumption only leads to twice the perfomance.

This makes me think about all the hardcore researchers who still work for IBM, and how IBM consistently discriminates against senior staff.

Original case:

https://features.propublica.org/ibm/ibm-age-discrimination-a...

It is still ongoing with hundreds of ex-employers suing IBM as of dec 2021.

That such things exist is just, sad.

Bitcoin’s intrinsic value seems to be as a way of turning $100 of electricity into $1 of currency.

You’re not wrong. Mining operators tamper their energy meters so their usage don’t reflect in the bill. My neighbour turned his residence into a mining farm, judging by the ludicrous number of installed air conditioning lol.

IBM develops and sells IP. Not to mention having the tech and getting yield and working at scale are completely different thing. I doubt it make much of a different.

VTFET is sub 2nm, on TSMC time table, assuming they use it, you get Nanowire ( GAA ) with 2nm in 2025, it normally get another generation of fine tuning and cost amortisation. So you are looking at 2029 ( 1nm ) for volume production at the earliest.

Maybe he’s running a side morgue. Or a swine vault. Or his kids just need lots of white noise to sleep and mama needs her nap. So many possibilities!
