If any site developers from HN are reading this thread -- please prioritize some of these quick wins to improve mobile UX and a11y. Some small CSS changes such as those suggested in the Notion post demonstrate, these quick wins that don't require a full-redesign do make a difference.

Obviously, understand that your team may be lean and have other priorities, but maybe hiring a contractor to resolve some these issues would be a way to address concerns for those with sight issues and those browsing on small screens.

Worse are the up and down arrows. They are truly made for ants. I wish HN would borrow one UX person from its own portfolio companies to improve the overall typography and UX.

Personally I think they work well since I can pinch zoom in to them and out again in a second or two.

As there are hundreds of thousands of them on the page, the size is important.

Same here. Of all websites I frequent HN has the best mobile experience. The only thing they need to fix is indeed up and down being too close to each other.

On playing with this it does initially say 'undown'. If you refresh the page it changes to 'unvote'. You could both be right.

The Refined Hacker News extension for Chrome has a “collapse root” button on each comment that I think does what you want.

Great extension. Thank you for recommending.

Yep, HN is one of the few websites I use my browser's zoom feature on. 125% is enough for me to comfortably read. Just a few lines of CSS could really improve readability here.

My eyesight is terrible but 175% is the sweet spot for me on Edge. 125% is still way too small for me.
