A person who is stressed or anxious is already feeling pressure. What makes you think they need more?
Well you learn to deal with it by being subjected to it. If you treat people like they're fragile, and don't apply this kind of pressure, they will grow up as fragile.

Exactly.
What really predicts success is how your parents are. But also how hard you work, how gifted you are and what kind of people you meet in school. It's not 100% the parents. There are plenty of rich parents with children with low educational results. They don't care.

How on earth do we de-escalate from here? I feel that in the US it is impossible to summon the political willpower to make it HARDER to graduate HS or go to college, even if these things would make society better off. My personal opinion is that the government should get out of education, just lower our taxes and let the free market handle the rest. Never gonna happen, however.

When educators and administrators try to saint themselves for pushing pass rates to 100% at all costs, parents should be skeptical and look at the outcomes: kids who graduate high school and don't know how to read or do basic math, etc.
Of course we need to do something for children whose home life is not conducive to learning, but more detail is needed before we can deem any particular approach praiseworthy. Some schools would like nothing more than to pass children through without being responsible for any learning occurring.

As a parent with a partner who also works full time, who who lost daycare for a few months at the start of the pandemic: Babysitting. Teachers main value add is babysitting. It's sad, and education is still highly valuable, but its the truth.
