Ask HN: Why do US based developers getting patents?

If I was interested in selling a company, for one thing, a patent is a tangible asset.

I've lost deals because potential customers heard we had filed a patent application (they thought we were going to rip them off) but had other people take my business more seriously because I was taking the patent route.
