Here's an observation that may help. I've noticed that people tend greatly to underestimate the flaminess (aggressiveness, provocation) of their own comments, let's say by 10x. And they tend greatly to overestimate the amount of badness that other people do, let's say by 10x. Putting those numbers together yields a 100x distortion in how much responsibility we usually assign ourselves. That's basically the problem. Objects in the mirror are a lot closer than they appear!
