I feel happy for the Apple community with these processors. But I can't stop to think my Intel machine. It feels like I am left in the dust and nothing seems to be coming that remotely looks like the M1.

Intel is years behind Apple, with no real strategy for catching up. Apple most likely already has the M2 ready, and the M3 under heavy development.

I just bought a new HP laptop with an i3-1125G4.

I just found out that this is a 10nm chip, roughly equivalent to TSMC's 7nm.

Maybe things are looking up for Intel?

These things came at a great time for me. My late-2014 MBP just received its last major OS upgrade (Big Sur), so I'm officially in unsupported waters now. I was getting concerned in that era from 2015-2019 with all the bad decisions (butterfly keyboard, no I/O, touchbar, graphics issues, etc.) but this new generation of MacBooks seems to have resolved all my points of concern. this is mostly wrong. The real issue has always been memory bandwidth. the highest end consumer x86 CPU has about the same memory bandwidth as a dGPU from 10 years ago. The M1 is extremely competitive with modern dGPUs, only a bit behind a 6900 XT.

Huge, apparently. I just spent a bit over $7,000 for a top-spec model and was surprised to read that it comes with a 140 watt power adapter. Prior to my current M1 MBP, my daily driver was a maxed-out 16" MBP. It's a solid computer, but it functions just as well as a space heater. And its power adapter is only 100 watts.

the power supply is for charging the battery faster. the new magsafe 3 system can charge with more wattage than usb-c, as per the announcement. usb-c max wattage is 100 watts, which was the previous limiting factor for battery charge.

Color me skeptical.

I believe you (and Apple) that the battery can be charged faster, but I am currently rendering video on an M1 MBP. Its power draw: ~20 Watts.

That's a lot of charging overhead.

They support fast-charging the battery to 50% in 30 minutes. That's probably the reason for the beefy charger.

I'm surprised the fast charger isn't a separate purchase, a la iPhone.

I’m not particularly surprised. They have little to prove with the iPhone, but have every reason to make every measurable factor of these new Macs better than both the previous iteration and the competition. Throwing in a future-model-upsell is negligible compared to mixed reviews about Magsafe 3 cluttering up reviews they otherwise expect to be positive.

You're right. My bad. It's much less common than I'd thought. (Intel had it on a number of chips that included the Iron Pro Graphics across Haswell, Broadwell, Skylake etc)

But only the Iris Pro 5200 (codename: Crystalwell) had eDRAM. All other Iris Pro were just normal DDR4. EDIT: Oh, apparently there were smaller 64MB eDRAM on later chips, as you mentioned. Well, today I learned something.

In the power/performance curves provided by Apple, they imply that the Pro/Max provides the same level of performance at a slightly lower power consumption than the original M1. But at the same time, Apple isn't providing any hard data or explaining their methodology. I dunno how much we should be reading into the graphs. /shrug

I think this is pretty easy to math: M1 has 2x the efficiency cores of these new models. Those cores do a lot of work in measured workloads that will sometimes be scheduled on performance cores instead. The relative performance and efficiency lines up pretty well if you assume that a given benchmark is utilizing all cores.

It's not a function of capability. I spent $4,000 on a 2019 MBP, including $750 for a Vega 20. It plays Elder Scrolls Online WORSE than a friend's 2020 with INTEGRATED graphics. Well, Apple is selling M1 Macs like hotcakes, so it won't be too long until it'll be stupid not to support them. Also, texture thrashing isn't really an issue when you've got a shared CPU/GPU memory with 64 GB of space. Just cache like half the game in it lol

Sure, it's candy for tech people, but the average person is going to scoff at a $2000 laptop. They can buy a functional laptop and a better gaming for that price. It's not going to change the gaming market.

Kind of surprising to me they’re not making more effort towards game support - maybe someone can explain what the barriers are towards mac support - is it lack of shared libraries, x64 only, sheer number of compute cores? When I see the spec sheet and “16x graphics improvement” I go okay what could it handle in terms of game rendering? Is it really only for video production and GPU compute tasks?

Price you can’t win the gaming market with 2000+$ product

Gaming market spends the most of any home electronics user except ultra rich mansion hi-fi outfitters. Entry gaming laptops are $1300, entry GPUs are $400 if you can find them.

Not competing against consoles, but against big rig gaming PCs, and products from Asus and Razor, and companies like Nvidia/Amd in compute.
