#3Techcrunch usually are allowed as many links per day as they like even if they are pure blog spam in nature while other smaller blogs aren't usually even allowed one.
Stop spamming us you're wasting your time is what most smaller sites can look forward to it.
Hackernews is pretty mainstream now so the mods are making money by promoting specific sites in a corrupt manner.
It's just how it is.

It is well known that the Hackernews is used as a publicity platform for the larger sites to keep their traffic up. Some of them are extremely dependent on it and they do bribe and cut deals with the mods here.
It's just how it is and has been for a long time.
Hackernews is just plain mainstream now.
