The scale is too large at this point and there isn't enough computation in the world to police the platform. The only way out of this mess is to open up the walled garden and let people choose how they engage with information available on Facebook. The issue is that their business model is fundamentally at odds with being more open because "engagement" metrics are how they convince advertisers to pay for ads displayed on Facebook properties. So forcing Facebook to open up will have to happen through government intervention and regulation.
