Since I've seen a few negative experiences in this topic, as a contrasting anecdote I've had the one inkjet (Epson) for the past 15 years which has worked fine all through and been useful for printing images and also for the time I used the feature printing on discs.

Exactly, I (but not a boomer mom level consumer) bought a HP Black & White Laser on sale from Walmart with Toner for 1000 pages, all for $49. Whenever that toner finishes (I bought about in 2019), new toner is again $49. Way cheaper. Any occasional color print goes to walmart or cvs or staples (exactly 2 times I have done that since I bought this printer).

Yes, but replacement toner is a full toner, I think 4k pages (or more). New printer comes with 1k pages toner only, and new printer price was black friday sale price, usually its $89.

Dumb question: How do I stop my wireless HP Printer from connecting to the internet? I have an Asus RT-N16 router and I can't see any settings that will restrict an IP from having WAN access.

Seems like something you could test and see if it works on your printer.

What's a test going to tell you? The reason he's saying it's a bad idea is because it's possible to end up with the printer executing a partially submitted job or not using settings that match up with the document you're trying to print.

Exact same situation. Avoid inkjet. Laser b/w if you need photo quality send to print

Unfortunately, laser printers have chips counting the lifetime too, e.g. https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-e&q=Samsung+M... . Or the HP logic bomb mentioned above: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28889672 (it was actually a logic bomb, as the check was AFAIK activated several months after the FW upgrade was released).

I am also in the Brother laser club. Don't know anyone having any printing problems with it. The new ones are super quiet too. They only tend to be a bit picky about the WiFi networks, so better to use with a cable.

Mmmmm, that’s partially true. Their IPP protocol however just rocks by Ethernet wire.

You can restrict it from going to internet on the router level.

Personal story about a sister-in-law that worked for Brother for 5+ years, all her stories made it seem like a employee focused and ethical company. She got really sick really fast, Brother fired her as suddenly the "position no longe existed", cancelled her health insurance, and - speaking with their lawyers - they knew that she might very well not live to see the end of a civil case trying to reinstate her position…

Wow. But today is a good climate to air this sort of dirty laundry. Name and shame.

Jeez, when I read about 'Big Printer' and The Printer Industrial complex all I ponder is why hasn't some startup devastated this industry with a reasonable printer and a reasonable relationship to users. The other thing I think about is that we must be in the twilight years of printers. Like 10-20 and they'll be mostly absent from homes and infrequent if at all present in most offices.

Looks like there's a LAN to WAN filter setting under Firewall maybe? Either that or if there's routing table settings you could use that.
