I think "view source" is a hacking tool invented by the notorious hacker group "4chan". I say we start a change.org petition to get Google to remove it from Chrome.

Every browser have access to the HTML source, even it is merely right click here and there. If the SSN is in the HTML source, then the blame should be on the webmaster who designed that code. I don't understand the age excuse, honestly. My mother is about the same age. She is not technical, but she has used computers for the last 30+ years. Just like anyone any other white collar worker. She would have wrangled with WordPerfect control codes to format insurance quotes in the 80s. Document markup (and stuff hidden in the markup) is not esoteric knowledge, or I wouldn't think it is. Except apparently it is.
