Series C? Wow, you guys must be hurting. That's got to be some serious dilution.

Nice FUD :) I obviously can't go into the details, but the fact that Couchbase is the result of a merger makes this a little different.

Haters gotta hate. Congrats to you guys.

What exactly qualifies as "leading NoSQL database company" ? I've been lazily waiting for a NoSQL solution to be deemed 'the winner' by the tech community. Then I won't waste time learning the 'wrong one'.

I've been doing the same with transportation. I hope the whole "riding a bike, driving a car, flying a plane and walking" bubble bursts and people settle on one of them

NoSQL obeys the second law of thermodynamics. Expect MORE fragmentation in the future, not less.

The thing to hope for is the death of the terminology and the proliferation, not consolidation, of technologies. Saying that all these diverse storage systems are all "NoSQL" and there will eventually be a "winner" is like saying that there will be one winner among Clojure, Scala, Java, JRuby, and Jython just because they all run on the JVM. Okay, so that's actually a bad comparison. In any case, what I mean to say is there's more than one thing moving under this blanket. Don't be fooled by the marketing.

Agreed with previous posters that there won't be one system to rule them all as there are a ton of use cases. Having said that every single system out right now sucks badly. Every one has some serious flaw or flaws. I'm not knocking anyone here, just this particular market is in its infancy at this point. It'll be a while before there is a truly good choice even if you are willing to pay money.

On a mostly unrelated note, the title of this post used to have the phrase "leading nosql database" in it, which is definitely marketing hyperbole :).

I swear to god my memory of my early lurking on HN was you contributing in a way that I learned something, but since I registered (and you had an exit), you seem more content in fucking with people. I just don't get it.
