I am not very familiar with laptop components, so this might be a silly question. Are there plans to offer a dedicated GPU version or is it not possible to do that with Nvidia/AMD ?

I am looking at buying a new laptop and currently the Razer Blade 14 or Alienware R-something are the top candidates. Would have loved to buy a Framework laptop, but it doesn't look like GPU is a consideration in the design.

(I don't want to carry an external GPU around while travelling)

So so so expensive. I can't really justify spending $1,999 for an i7 laptop.

The $1,999 SKU is with vPro, which most folks won't need. Our i7-1165G7 SKU is $1,399, or lower if you go the DIY Edition path and already have storage or memory or want to use Linux.

Hey there nirav, would you consider using a firmware that supports rndis? Ami's does.

I think 16-32 is the sweet spot. For specific use case I could see 64. But beyond that it would be <.1% of users. Like u would want a thread ripper or 2s at that point

What are some practice applications/usecases for that much (64) memory? I'm in the process of building a PC and I'm trying to figure out what ram size should I go for.

I can work comfortably with docker, WSL2 (VS Code remote), 2 IntelliJ, VS Code and 2 versions of Firefox (developer edition and normal, for a total of 6 windows and up to a few hundred tabs ) on 32GB.

If you have complex virtual setups (or use Chrome, according to some, I won't known since I barely touch it these days) then you might need it.

Some ideas.

- VMs for testing eat up memory fast. - A deep disk IO cache dramatically speeds up some workloads, even if processes aren't allocating the memory themselves. - Running a bunch of microservices locally (we have a webpack-based app that eats 16GiB easy - yes, yes... we're working on it).

I think 64 is a bit extreme these days for a personal computer if you're not running a stack of VMs. Servers are a different story, of course.

Has anyone from EU bought it? They offer 1 year warranty, shouldn't we get 2?

You get the 2 year warranty in EU by default for everything you buy as a consumer, the companies cannot give you only 1 year warranty, it’s mandated by the law.

Yeah I was wondering how does it apply for companies who don't have a EU based entity, should they not dispatch to EU or it is a gentleman agreement that if they do dispatch to EU it is 2 years warranty? Who would EU fine anyway? The Us entity?

But i guess you're right, the entity point above still stands imho outside of US, but on their warranty page there is at the bottom

I bought a Thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen2 two years ago and it has been chugging along. It has plenty of expansion available for RAM/Storage so unless something like the motherboard fails, I hope to get several more years out of it.

I just hope Framework as a company lasts until it is time for me to replace my laptop because I want their laptop to be my next one.

Uh, you missed the main feature of the device. Basically everything in the laptop is user replaceable. Even the motherboard can be swapped and presumably replaced with a newer model. The ports can be swapped too, so no more wishing you had more USB ports or ethernet ports or whatever. You could even design your own expansion card. Framework can release new keyboards, screens, etc and the user can just install them as…

If the motherboard is replaceable, why not order one now, then upgrade to an AMD motherboard + CPU when they’re available?

What will I do with the spare motherboard? It would likely be too hard to sell. I wonder if framework will sell you the chassis parts without a motherboard?
