My company assigned me Macbook with a VPN to do programming work. If it were up to me I'd use Linux. I can still get to that BSDish MacOS Unix.

#162I only use Linux on PCs but I would consider my phone to be primary so my accidental daily OS is Android or Lineage.
To switch away from anything based on Android, I really just need calling/modem, Firefox and Signal.

If people give that advice, ignore it. No matter what, you're going to get some unhelpful advice. Comes with the territory. Similarly, just include your distro in any searches.

Answers like that are very common, meaning that you commonly get unhelpful advice. But worse, those people get angry when you don't accept their advice. The Linux Desktop community has a serious problem with letting these kinds of people continue to represent them.

Doesn't work very well for a few reasons. For one, Google sucks at actually delivering results that you asked for even with Verbatim. Second, a lot of times no one has had that problem on your distro specifically, or hasn't reported it, or hasn't received any help even if they did.

#165It's simple: Linux offers me nothing over the OS that ships with my PC or Mac.
Installing another OS takes a small amount of effort, so Linux needs to at least provide enough value-add for me to bother. It does not.

My Linux machine nagged me to do a system-wide update (usually a language pack for Firefox, because they changed one word) every day. Windows 10 is a lot smarter about when to nag about updates.

Vendors are killing their applications all the time.

I've had the opposite experience with windows lately -- start menu type to search randomly stops working and I have to restart, windows will do this weird thing where you have to rapidly click their dock icon to get them to show up or they minimize.
