#3Would Apple actually change their default search engine to a far inferior competitor like Bing if Google didn’t pay up? It is shocking to me that Google needs to spend this much when they are already the most preferred search engine by Apple’s customers.

You are probably right that Google is preferred, but do we actually know how many people would switch if the default became DDG or Bing or something? The fact the payment is made would seem to suggest that Google know, or strongly suspect.
