Last time I was in a Walmart, it felt like they were doing everything they could to communicate they didn't want me to shop at their store. * Gates at the main entrances * Cameras everywhere * "Security" walking through the store in clearly marked uniforms * Self checkouts with UX that clearly communicates a lack of trust.
In my experience, this is not a general Walmart policy, it is store-specific. Not too long ago I was looking for a product that only Walmart seems to keep in stock, but they don't keep much of it. And their online system is not very accurate. So in the space of two hours I visited four different Walmarts, ranging from one in a nicer area of town, to one in a poor area. Let's leverage the current mask trend, and make masks that are low-rez displays, and project a loop of shifting blurry different generated facial features, like the scramble suits in scanner darkly :)

They're trying to recognize your face anyway. e.g. see https://pages.nist.gov/frvt/html/frvt_facemask.html It looks like the testing is still done in relation to synthetic masks, but I could see that shifting over time. Absolutely repugnant that the industry is targeting masked individuals, but it's happening none the less.

My answer is to not worry about it and be glad that these practices lower prices.

Meh I think it’s going to be acceptable to wear a mask for at least 5 years, and perhaps indefinitely, which easily defeats facial recognition.

There were stories in Germany reporting that if you wore a face mask when driving, you must not also be wearing sunglasses and/or a hat ... because the driver's face must be recognisable if you're caught by a speed camera.
