Or is it the response we would have seen out of CA, if they had been stopped before 2016?

Funny that Facebook had no issue with Cambridge Analytica until Cambridge Analytica became an issue. Let's also ignore the fact that Cambridge Analytica was a private foreign company illicitly compiling data to influence US elections. But yes by all means, it's no different than a research group and volunteers studying an algorithm. You definitely nailed it.

How do you guarantee it is just a research group?

#5All related research fields as a whole need to outcast FB research/ers unless they mend their ways. If they had their way anyone doing packet capture should be blocked...

It should be remembered that the Obama administration carried out the same type of research as Cambridge Analytica to influence the 2012 election.
If this research is going to be criticised, it should be done evenly, not just when it's politically convenient.

FB’s response to imagine the worst and outright ban is awfully convenient. Do you really think FB is so on top of their user’s privacy otherwise?
