I am very left, and despise Biden's refusal to address climate change where it counts, like fraking. But honestly, the new boss is not the same as the old boss, even with climate change. The new boss does in fact acknowledge it exists, rather than insisting that all climate change is a hoax and it is invented by China to hurt the US. Biden is not making the progress I'd like to see, but he is in no way as bad as the…

This is nonsense. Whether someone virtue signals or not, actions are what's important, not words. The CO2 emissions output has been coming down since the high in 2006. With the old boss and the new boss. https://www.statista.com/statistics/183943/us-carbon-dioxide... If anything, fracking helped the environment, since it offset resources being mined by the traditional, more wasteful methods.

> If anything, fracking helped the environment

Maybe fracking helped reduce emissions for now, but it remains to be seen whether it helped the environment. It could take decades to learn about all the negative impacts it has.

Imagine an asteroid would be on trajectory to collide with earth in (say) 2025. Possible order of hypothetical events: 1. Scientist discover the asteroid. Calculate risk of collision. 2. Asteroid comes closer, probability of impact is calculated as high. 3. People will start saying that we cannot let our economy be controlled by the specter of an asteroid. 4. The asteroid becomes visible. You can see it with your bar…

I believe this is the premise of an upcoming Netflix movie: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don't_Look_Up_(2021_film)

Cool. I'll watch that one!

(Case in point that everything I have ever thought of has been thought of already by someone else. :) )

Who still believes global warming does not exist? I am currently listening to audiobook of Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six (1998). It has a paragraph on global warming and trying to convince POTUS it is real. And POTUS not wanting to act on it because it would be too large economic drag on US. This book is almost quarter of century old.

It's real, it's because of humans, it's not a civilization threat, and it probably isn't in the top 5 most important problems facing us this century.

Reducing carbon emissions is no longer enough. Carbon removal is the only hope. YC is funding startups in this space: http://carbon.ycombinator.com/

Carbon removal is not possible in sufficient magnitude to make a difference, sorry.

source on this? The most important thing right now is definitely reducing emissions, but carbon capture certainly has a significant role to play

Nobody is denying that the weather has been warming. It's all the political hysterics and nonsense that a lot of people have issues with. And of course the "world-is-ending" chicken little craziness.

And if you watched Day After Tomorrow, are you going to use that as an example of the globe cooling?

With every shift in weather, the media and the mindless always scream the world is ending. Our parents' generation had to worry about global cooling.

"As they review the bizarre and unpredictable weather pattern of the past several years, a growing number of scientists are beginning to suspect that many seemingly contradictory meteorological fluctuations are actually part of a global climatic upheaval. However widely the weather varies from place to place and time to time, when meteorologists take an average of temperatures around the globe they find that the atmosphere has been growing gradually cooler for the past three decades. The trend shows no indication of reversing. Climatological Cassandras are becoming increasingly apprehensive, for the weather aberrations they are studying may be the harbinger of another ice age."

Here's a documentary featuring leonard nemoy about "climate change".

If you were alive 50 years ago, you'd ranting about global cooling. Did the world end 50 years ago? Of course not. But of course global warming/climate change isn't about the climate is it? It's about politics and business. I'll make a bet, in 50 years, we are all going to be laughing about global warming like we laugh about global cooling today. Banks are making 100 year old loans, all major powers are angling for influence over the arctic, etc. Doesn't seem like the political, business, military, etc elites are preparing for the world to end anytime soon.

The "it's not man made" and "just a natural cycle" is easily disproven by showing historical temperatures change where it does, by pure accident, a hockey stick trick just last century. Or it would if the audience wasn't resistant to proofs altogether...

50 million years ago, there were forests in the arctic and the earth was much hotter than it is right now. Climate change comes in both man-made and natural varieties, and it's important to acknowledge the difference. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eocene

Also we have built a very large amount of infrastructure that assumes the climate is the way it is now.

You think it's expensive and annoying to have software dependencies pushed to you when you aren't ready, try being forced to take SeaLevel 2.0 and HurricaneFrequency 10 before you are ready.

>But the fact it exists in the country with the largest per-person capita of CO2 emissions I have a feeling that you're not talking about all the people rolling coal in Palau. US isn't even in the top 10 when it comes to carbon emissions per capita. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_carbon_di...

Or the Falkland Islands, population 3,000. They are the real problem! The combined populations of the small states above you don’t even reach 1/3rd of the USA’s population.

I'm not saying it's not a problem, just that you have a factual error in your comment.

Honestly, given our track record I don't understand how we've actually managed to ban fluorocarbons globally.

Most of the deniers I know have shifted from it doesn't exist to either its not man made and just a natural cycle or it may actually be a good thing because plants like CO2 and warmth...

Might be more "politically efficient" to extract it though.

I think this is basically a play by big oil to try to keep their business alive. We actually are pretty much at the point where the only thing standing between us and MASSIVE emissions reductions are special interest groups. Solar/wind are now the cheapest energy in the US, and the move is starting already

I hope they invent time travel in the far future and travel back in time to abduct oil & gas executives to force them to pay penance for their role in ruining the planet. Because they've gotten off scott free for decades.
