#12Since onsite is usually implied and rarely mentioned explicitly in the text, taking a corpus that mentions either term will bias heavily towards remote

Benefits are just an appealing name given to anything an employer chooses to spend money on instead of paying you that money (and the trade typically works in their favor). Certainly, there are cases where contract employment is offered with pay that does not compete well against full-time employment/salary plus benefits, but that is not always the case. Anecdotally, I've seen contracts done as W2 with benefits, even…
Umm, we live in a hell world without universal healthcare. Until that changes bennies are pretty important
(I'm not in the US, you seem to have your own hell there, but still, every 'benefit' has a price tag, no?)

#14I have an LLC if that works, I figure I could do a Corp to Corp as long as LLC exists within the US.

I’m seeing is a lot for software development job postings in Canada. It is “remote” but you are required to live in the city.
Also an uptick in American companies attempting to hire remote from Canada, which is potentially good, except that I doubt many of them actually have the infrastructure (payroll, benefits, etc.) for doing the hire, so it's either contract, or it never actually happens.

I think the point was that some employers may pay you more than enough for you to pay for your own health insurance (even after tax deductions). (I'm not in the US, you seem to have your own hell there, but still, every 'benefit' has a price tag, no?)

Job listing: Remote possible
First/Second interview: We would actually prefer this position to be on site.

#19I also would not be surprised if more American jobs are now hiring people on as contractors only, without the benefits.

Nominally, this works out for both employer and employee, since those benefits can be paid for with pre tax money. Really, it gives big businesses an advantage over small businesses that cannot afford the costs to administer these benefits or the non discrimination testing. And it advantages businesses over employees by obfuscating what their true pay is.
It also gets hairy for a married couple where one spouse is a W-2 employee with the standard retirement contribution and subsidized health insurance benefits, but the other does not.

#20most of the stuff I've seen is "temporarily remote" until COVID is over, so there is still an expectation that you will eventually come in. Who knows if that will ever happen, but it is quite a different situation between the two.
Labor market conditions are very clear.
