I don’t know if this is a good indicator or not, but Codespaces costs money. So there is a non-zero probability that you are not the product.

Windows also costs money and is chock full of spyware.

One of the things I like about my local install of vscode is that it doesn’t burn cash. If I have to hop into a meeting, or take a lunch break, or take a shower, I don’t have to ask myself “Oh, did I forget to turn off my IDE?”.

I wish most people cared as much as you about not leaving random EC2 instances running.

We currently have best developer machines ever in the history of development, and we squandered it all with bloat so much that we need to use a thin client to do development? That too on a platform where they can easily snoop on your code, collect whatever metrics they like and use it against you (one way or another)? No thank you.

Call me a luddite if you will, but I feel that the developers should be wary about protecting their craft. This will end up with BigCos turning this into another Social Dilemma type scenario.

Unfortunately, that rule doesn't apply to Microsoft and the other tech giants.

You still have to grab the dependencies before running make, some of which you'll grab from apt/yum/chocolatey/macports, some you'll need to compile manually and put in a platform-dependent location, ... Then you can run `make world`. Of course, BSD make is not completely compatible with GNU make...

OpenBSD and FreeBSD at least can compile themselves from /usr/src on a default install, fresh out of the box with zero additional packages.

The underlying 'git' is open source. Just deal with your git repos raw. No one is forcing you to use github.

This is completely false. Microsoft bought GitHub to appeal to developers. They had TFS and Azure DevOps with Git for years before the purchase. I'm also 100% certain Microsoft was/is not GitHub's largest customer.

Current place of employment uses a similar system, power outages are quite pleasant.

Was it a common knowledge at the time? I don’t recall seeing info about MS being largest user and unfortunately their newspost on acquisition returns an error…
