Amazing, that's ~50 million smartphones that will never be used on a 5G network before reaching a landfill.

I thought most developed countries already have 5g deployments? edit: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_5G_NR_networks

Yeah, at least in the US T-Mobile already has 5G deployed in most of their network footprint and AT&T and Verizon are quickly playing catch-up.

Just because they don't have a 5G network doesn't mean they wont see improvements in the modem. I jumped on the iPhone 12 because it's finally a qualcomm modem and not the trash Intel ones. I have coverage in places I could only dream from my XS.

2 networks have 5G in my city, my network has no immediate plans to introduce 5G here.

The US (and friends) are quite a long way behind because they refused to use Huawei 5G equipment.

Huawei was market leader by 1+ year, so countries which have used Huawei are mostly fully deployed already.

I remember when 4G coverage was new, I was out and about one day when I got a notification on my work phone that I had a zillion app updates pending and I just pressed "Install All". 10 minutes later it had chewed through my data quota for the month. Sometimes bandwidth just isn't all that useful.

The usage of a 5g capable phone may also require an "upgrade" to a 5g capable plan. The major upgrade at the moment is paying more money. If it is 1 phone, then it is not that big a deal, but the cost value is not there with an (extended) family plan of 6 phones.
