the "concerns" are mostly coming from a small number of people that you probably wont be able to convince. Better to not use your platform to amplify them https://www.npr.org/2021/05/13/996570855/disinformation-doze... Just 12 People Are Behind Most Vaccine Hoaxes On Social Media, Research Shows

This should be a non-issue. If these 12 bad guys have no points, no arguments, no good faith motives - that’s them against the entire western scientific community, the entire media, almost all politicians, celebrities, unions, vested interests… How do you explain these “12 people” aren’t immediately shut down with all the facts?

Because facts aren't enough to win an argument. Especially when people pushing false conspiracy theories don't care about being consistent or accurate.

Especially when you need to "win" with over 95% of the population and not just a plurality or majority.

Also sadly some news media, some politicians, (don't know about labor unions sadly would not be totally surprised)some celebrities and vested interests are pushing harmful anti-vax agenda that hurts everyone.

> Will facebook be forced to show its users the same nastiness it just booted off, because of the interop necessities? Facebook should be forced to show me the feeds I choose to subscribe to. I'm perfectly capable of deciding for myself whether I find something nasty, and I find the idea of Zuckerberg as an arbiter of morality both absurd and dystopian.

>Facebook should be forced I would consider this sentiment more absurd and dystopian than Facebook freely removing content from its own website.

Why? Facebook is not a person, it should exist solely at our discretion. "People should not be afraid of their governments, governments should be afraid of their people" applies even more strongly to corporations than to governments.

Google is apparently going to be doing that with content on Drive. Not sure what they've said or not said about gMail but what's the difference, really?

The difference is that gmail isn't publicly serving your emails to an open audience. The restrictions on Drive are only for publicly-served content.

That isn't true, they already block you from downloading content from private shared folders that they decide to restrict.

This all sounds very nice, but there's a bit of sleight of hand here since the article goes out of its way to avoid details. That way everyone reads into exactly what they want, and it's totally non-obvious whether this is actually a workable proposal or not. But what's the concrete proposal here? How would things actually work? Will the services be forced to accept whatever unmoderated feed of filth the linked to se…

>But what's the concrete proposal here? How would things actually work? Will the services be forced to accept whatever unmoderated feed of filth the linked to service sends their way? If not, how is this supposed to fix the moderation problem? Does gmail block emails from your friends containing misinformation? Why should facebook be allowed to do the same thing?

Don't they? If someone sends me spam/malware I expect gmail to filter that, even if it is from a friend's (hijacked) account.

I think there definitely is a very blurry line between spam/fraud and spam/misinformation.

Big tech censorship will not solved without addressing the other half of a problem with two sides. Without systems that promote quality, non-ideological, nuanced, original, tolerant dialogue we will keep running into the false dilemma of unmoderated cess pools or heavy handed moderation. If we are to avoid this dilemma we need systems that organically promote constructive, tolerant and inclusive communication, and or…

Right and Left are basically ideologies carrying to the different ideas of society depending upon gender. On average for females a more redistributing, moderating society is more attractive. For men a society that allows them to display "provider" status seems more attractive. To frame the whole thing as a ideological debate, in a society with massive change of roles and influence is intellectual dishonest. Some tran…

Bro what the hell are you on about? Have you read anything on Left v Right wing ideologies? What?

Left v Right is about proletariat vs bourgeoise and it originates from French politic during the revolution where the left side of the assembly favored moving power towards the people and the right were Monarchists that wanted King Louis' continued reign.

To equate this to gender is unbelievably ignorant bordering on intellectual dishonesty.

The lab-leak hypothesis is provocative (and probably true), but got smothered anyway. It was just inconsistent with the narrative .

It didn’t get smothered though. Since the early days of the pandemic I haven’t seen any discussion of the pandemic of any appreciable length that doesn’t contain mentions of that hypothesis.

That's a case of the "marketplace of ideas" routing around the attempted suppression by the large media organizations and government. I don't think you would have read any mention of it (besides condemnation) from any of them, until the last few months.

Geez, I think that paragraph is completely true, but it sure sounds like conspiratorial nonsense. The state we're in...

>First of all, the internet’s “marketplace of ideas” is severely lopsided at the platform level The marketplace of ideas itself has been show to be a bust in recent years, IMHO. Better ideas, better models of truth and reality don't win out. People have not shown themselves interested in intellectual debate or argument. We do not see the 'best' ideas rise to the top. And before anyone asks who I am to judge the best…

> Better ideas, better models of truth and reality don't win out.

These are just subjective judgements. All you're saying is that people you don't share the same value judgements with won out.
