Ask HN: How do you do home security?

#1
There's some weird happenings on my block lately and I wanted to be more proactive about the security of my house. However, I don't quite trust Nest or the other top brands of video monitoring. Looking for options that people trust. What has worked for you?

I forget what brand it is at the moment, but I bought security cameras to monitor all around my house, because someone had stolen my bicycle. They work very well and store data up to 30 days. Their mobile app is kinda glitchy, but it works well. Once I get home I can tell you the name.

I lock my doors, and have wooden dowels in the tracks of the windows to keep them from being opened from the outside.

Getting footage of a person breaking in to your home and stealing your valuables seems pretty pointless to me. Unless someone gets murdered during the break-in, the cops won't do anything with it.

All you're doing is advertising that you have valuables worth monitoring.
