Ask HN: Where to Start My Startup? Miami/Austin/SV/NYC/Denver?

Hi HN! My startup recently closed a 150K pre-seed, and I have to relocate to the US (I have a green card which requires me to live in the US half of the year). I will be working from home, and my cofounder is in Europe. Our B2B clients are not in the US, but our B2C are.

My priorities are to be able to live very cheaply (gonna pay myself minimum wage, only so that I can pay bills), have good internet access, and have things to do outdoors when not working (surfing, skiing, hiking, climbing, sunbathing, swimming, whatever really I will anything the land has to offer). Also priority is to build a network so I can raise a seed. We won't be hiring anytime soon, so talent pool is not required.

I've considered Miami, Austin, SV, NYC suburbs, Denver. Lowest rent I've found for both NYC and SV (San Jose) was 2K-ish for 1br apt, while Miami 1.5K and Austin and Denver 1.2K.

Where should I move to? I've had people recommend moving to North Carolina so I can have even cheaper costs, but not really sold on that idea yet. I've also considered moving to the surf areas in North Florida (Cocoa, New Smyrna), rent is super cheap there and there's surfing all the time so thats a huge plus but not sure. Also I might need to travel to the Bahamas to meet with clients in the future.

Any ideas?

I live in a city just north of New Smyrna and it is definitely a good choice if you want something less expensive but still close to nearly everything. There are 2 colleges in the immediate area both of which attract a diverse group of people, but we still skew to an older demo, like much of Florida. However, our average age is more middle age, and not senior like NSB tends to be.

It isn't a major city as you are probably aware, so if you are looking for that I'd pick Miami, Jacksonville or Austin. Jacksonville has a pretty well established startup ecosystem, and until recently it was better then Miami IMO. Although now I'd choose Miami of Jax.

I like where I am, it is a great community, low cost of living and we have all the key things needed to run a business. Plus I am within an hour drive to Orlando, ~2 hrs to Tampa, just over an hour to Jacksonville and just under 4 hours to Miami. So I can get anywhere I need easily but I don't have to pay crazy living expenses and I can live in a smaller community that has great beaches etc. There is even a number of investors with property here (and live here) and whom you can network with as well. In this area there is a pretty large group of people from outside the US which is great, but is not common IME for smaller communities.

FWIW: I have lived in Austin, Melbourne (FL), New Smyrna (and surrounding area) and Denver. Hands down for life style I love where I am. Austin is also really hard to beat, I just happen to love being near the ocean. I haven't lived in Miami (just visit often), but I'd also have no problem living there. I wouldn't choose Jacksonville, but I have worked in Jax off and on. You mention Bahama's too, we have a couple of companies that fly to the Bahamas direct out of either Daytona or NSB airports which is pretty nice.

Thank you Davis! Your help is much appreciated! I also saw theres a cheap ferry going to the bahamas from miami so thats a huge plus as well! I also know those beaches are the best on the East Coast for surfing and nothing can beat that haha.

One question I have is whether part-time jobs are available in the area to fall back on in case my startup is cash-strapped? Jobs like uber and doordash and the sorts?

Yep. There are both manufacturing and tourist part time jobs that are almost always available. Plus Uber, Lyft, door dash etc is all here.

And Yea I've done the ferry quite a few times, definitely a cool way IMO. There are lots of ways to get to the Bahamas from Florida daily. And generally it is pretty inexpensive.
