The flagging history of all the users who flagged that post was very consistent. There was no connection to any specific topic (nor between the accounts, that I could see). Rather, they have previously flagged stories about things like cryptocurrency, ransomware, covid lockdowns, $BigCo flamewars, and lots and lots of scandals involving such subjects as Florida, Katie Hill, and the Chicago Police Department. Also, mo…

Sounds like you're saying it was flagged because veteran users knew it would be a shit show which it is. lol

It's easy to predict any submission related to China will turn into a shitshow because you have the usual suspects like justicezyx resorting to whataboutism, cry racism, flagging, etc.

Want to censor a thread on HN? Flag it with a few different users, or turn the thread into a shitshow so that the "flamewar" tools will be triggered, or moderators will be forced push the thread off the frontpage.

@dang, I think we need an explanation for why Tank Man-related content on Hacker News has been disappearing all day. I usually trust HN to be a bastion of free speech, and if there isn't some kind of proportionate response here, I don't believe myself or many others here will be able to see it that way going forward. EDIT: Thank you for your response, dang. Hacker News is a special place, which is why we have respond…

This post is on the front page right now (edit: and now also https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27396783 ) - that's the opposite of "disappearing". I'd have to see links to the other ones. Here's one tip for you guys, from years-long, world-weary experience: if you're coming up with sensational explanations in breathless excitement, it's almost certainly untrue. Edit: ok, here's what happened. Users flagged https:/…

Tool like the one developed by @janmo could be of some help to visualize theses kind of moderation incidents.

Should not Bing have a separate/dedicated search engine in China? Does Bing has to censure US/World results from a well know fact to be allowed to operate in China? Because I have some difficulties to understand why Bing is censuring such fact outside the Great Firewall of China.

Or maybe not censure it at all? Maybe say "Thanks, but no thanks" to the CCP?

Then they would have to exit that market and I don't know about you but if I'm a shareholder in MSFT, losing on the 3rd biggest market in the world with massive growth potential doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

Been with DDG for 8+ years.

Let's just admit, that the privacy respecting search engines have a huge fault — a killswitch that they don't own.

DDG isn't investing in their own crawlers so this can happen anytime now. At least Google showed me the picture.

A proposal for a vouching system, since others suggested the idea but not an implementation: Any user can "vouch" for an article. This gets stored in a database, but doesn't do much on it's own. There's a secret karma cutoff, above which the vouch gets "counted", and if there's more vouches than flags a moderator is alerted to give the article extra attention. Any time vouching triggers extra attention, the decision…

Thanks! I'm too tired to do this justice now but I'll try to reread it later.
