Unless I'm mistaken, there is a license to call a port a USB port, though goods are commonly sold without that. In theory the solution is simple: only buy products that have the actual USB logo and ensure certification, and the USB-IF should retain the right to significantly fine any manufacturer advertising being to spec and using the logo who is in fact not. In practice, people aren't going to stop buying nintendo…

I just took my Samsung A50 out of the case, no USB logo anywhere on the device. There's the Samsung logo, some recycling logo and a CE logo, and that's it.

Ok, so you detect voltage drop of say 0.4V@5A on the phone end, so slightly out of spec. How do you decide whether it's a slightly underspecced cable (quite common) and 2W being radiated as heat from a 1m long cable (which is not really an issue), or great cable but high contact resistance (where 2W are concentrated into a tiny space that can't cool it)?

The cheapest option I see is a fusible link from some very low melting point material.

Depends on the laptop. Don't search for the ASUS G14, the G14 is dead when plug too much power into it. Bold statement, but I've warned you. You need power, your going to hear the fans. There's currently no solution for cooling it quietly.

I'm somewhat confused by all this. My desktop PC has a RX5600, which I understand isn't particularly power hungry (nor powerful), but I still consider it a decent GPU. And the card, with its heat sink and fans isn't all that thick and stays reasonably quiet under load, even though I have a 135W CPU next to it. Could probably be even better if the fans were pulling air directly from outside. At work, we have HP EliteD…

Because the majority of consumers have voted with their wallets for thin, sleek and sexy devices with poor cooling that are loud and thermal throttle.

If you want bulky, well cooled laptops, there are enough to choose from. XMG makes them for example.

The problem is the gazillion of proprietary fast charging standards. Some of them were designed for chargers with attached cable, and not disconnectable one. Actually they do. My OnePlus wich uses the same VOOC tech will not charge at full power with its fast charger if I don't use the cable from the box.

It’s because virtually no one outside of Hacker News seems to have these problems. The rest of the world seems to love the singular port.

Wait until you have to do tech support for someone who has a USB-C charging cable that doesn't work connecting their hard drive. Singular cable wasn't in the specs.

I’ll take that hypothetical problem over what we had in the past. A dozen different plugs, a dozen different cables, multiple required docks, incompatible charging bricks, proprietary plugs, and more.

I have yet to come across an issue with USB-C either personally or externally. But maybe some day it will happen. And I still won’t care because it’s better than it used to be.

don't external GPUs have their own power?

Currently they do. They wouldn't need it if such a high-power connection became the norm.

Do you use A to C cable, or C to C?

VooC A to C has a fifth pin mapped to CC pin on C side.

Rogue VooC C to C chargers just send VooC signalling directly on CC.

Do you use A to C cable, or C to C? VooC A to C has a fifth pin mapped to CC pin on C side. Rogue VooC C to C chargers just send VooC signalling directly on CC.
