XMPP MUC is is fantastic, but it seems like the only public chats are for developing XMPP clients.
There are a lot of those of course, but browsing https://search.jabber.network/ I see for example: - xmpp:openhardware@conference.magicbroccoli.de?join for chatting about open hardware - xmpp:discuss@conference.soprani.ca?join for chatting about bridges and opening up the phone network - xmpp:floss@rooms.dismail.de?join for general FLOSS discussion - xmpp:thinkpad-user@rooms.dismail.de?join for people who love thinkp…

#252Apparently London Trust Media, the company founded by Andrew Lee and which purchased Freenode, has now rebranded under the name "Imperial Family Companies". londontrustmedia.com now redirects to https://imperialfamily.com/ and it lists Freenode under Technology. Andrew Lee also claims to be the crown prince of Korea, which was no doubt the inspiration for this move: https://www.latimes.com/business/real-estate/story/…

#254I'm a little confused by all this controversy. I'm no stranger to people trying to exert secret influence in open-source projects, and put themselves in positions of power to satisfy egos, etc. and I certainly don't like that kind of thing. But what was actually done on Freenode? I've read several of the volunteer resignations and it seems to just be that they're obviously now in control and people don't like that. I…
So if you mean "is there actual end-user operational impact to the network", it seems that there isn't so far, but the way Lee took over everything does not bode well and I completely understand why the existing staff resigned. When staff processes change so suddenly and abruptly, end-user visible changes tend to follow, and in any case this warrants significant loss of trust.

I sure hope so! ...Not only because "yay, more people on the matrix network"...but because it would bring even more devs and designers (and content writers for documentation!), which would bring continued improvements to the ecosystem of servers and clients/apps as well as the matrix protocol itself! (Obviously, massive shout outs to all who do this tough work already, but more eyes/hands makes the bucket of bugs sha…
Running a Matrix homeserver is still quite a pain in the ass, especially because there is no real automatic way to purge old history. Join a busy room once and pay for it in megs or gigs of text stored in your DB forever. Just using a matrix.org account instead is antisocial at this point because of the resources you're taking from the project, whereas paying for a hosted homeserver might not be something everyone ca…
You might be right. Yet, I'm still hopeful for the matrix network and protocol. Also, irc has had a bit of a head start, having had the benefit of decades of eyes looking at it, and hands helping to improve it. Then again, 2 or 3 decades from today, I might be the one holding onto my matrix network world when someone else on a forum discusses the merits (warts and all) of some new protocol for communications scenarios (not limited to chat). :-)

#258Welp, we had a good run, far longer than I expected.

#260It's interesting to me that the draft was censored and mentioned a buyer, while this one only talks about control. For me, it paints the situation worse. Still sad to see FreeNode fall. This will lead to a lot of split communities and dead links. EDIT: Fuchs finds some harsher words[0]: > In the past few weeks, this has changed[2], and the existance of a legal threat to freenode has become apparent. We cannot know th…
A lot of questions here: > christel, now former head of freenode staff sold `freenode ltd` (a holding company) to a third party why was the previous owner/director(s) of this company (presumably christel) and what rights did they have to sell - and where did the money go? EDIT: yes https://opencorporates.com/companies/gb/10308021 also, it is claimed by AL that christel was harrassed. Fuchs contests this. > it seems t…
Freenode the vaguely defined project staff, not Freenode the company staff.
