Q: Do accounts/channels that have been inactive for years get purged automatically? Used to have some stuff there, not sure if it's worth the time to find the correct emails/passwords.
I had not used IRC in a long time, just checked libera.chat... it doesn't work ("software caused connection abort")
It's irc.libera.chat, and seems to work fine here, though servers are understandably dealing with a surge (particularly on nick registration).

Don't want them to know your phone number or email address? Simply don't give it to them. It won't break your Matrix experience in any way. Using the centralized identity server is entirely opt-in for this specific reason.
you are free to use libera.chat for your branding domain. But could you switch to something like liberachat.com for the actual server and turn on registry lock please (Safenames or Cloudflare,etc)

What I wanted to say was, I tried to join the new server and discovered it was down. So if they can't survive HN front page, I'm not sure it's a good idea to move decades-old communities to it.
I'm in the same boat as you. Your best bet is to join #lesswrong and ask them about the implications, I think. They seem to care a lot about this.
