Is Apple even going to refresh any of its Mac products with Intel CPUs at this point? Man, that half a millimetre difference between connected and disconnected drove me nuts. It is absolutely infuriating because there is zero physical feedback when you try to connect the cable.

I don't have anything helpful to offer but I feel your pain. Reading your comment almost brings on PTSD from remembering what it was like.

I actually restored my 2015 Macbook Pro and have been so happy and content using that in the past two years or so. Not sure about the other sizes, but my 13" from 2015 does everything better than the one from 2017. Performance, keyboard, connectors. None of the overheating bullshit where the fan is constantly going and performance is throttled.

They released a new keyboard with TouchID and no TouchBar. IMO, that means the TB is dead. Otherwise, it's a niche item that no one will ever make full use of.

I wouldn't take that as a clear sign. They still made an M1 touch bar 13" MBP, they bothered to refresh it and keep it when swapping from butterfly back to scissor and the MBA only has touchID too.

The touch bar is handled by the T1/T2/M1 chips in the laptops. It could be that just cramming a T2+OLED into a keyboard may have made it way too expensive for a keyboard. Plus does Bluetooth even have enough bandwidth to handle sending screen data that size reliably?

It is a niche item and it does suck but for some reason they keep tacking it on...

Used both in an M1 Mac. Haven’t seen the beach ball yet (VSCode and multiple windows of safari)

I've been using Macs for 13-14 years, and each upgrade to the 'newest and fastest and most powerful' I think 'hmm... maybe this will stop beach balling'. But it doesn't. Mind you, I only have an 8 core 2.3ghz with ssd and a mere 16gig of ram - I'm sure the 'powerful' Macs won't have this problem. But I also mostly hear from people who never experience beach balls ever, and I can't figure out what they're doing.

I did see a guy with an m1 in our coworking space who hit a beach ball last week while showing me something, so I know it's not just me or my various hardware. but perhaps its more rare?

That's because changing the chassis is too expensive, but when they redesign it, you'll see it most likely without a touchbar.

What kind of professional? I do programming and I work just fine with my 48 inch 4k LG OLED. Sure, it's big, but it's only $1.5k with features that monitors currently don't have, such as OLED with 120 hz.

Yes, you should wait, especially if you're looking for a 16" MacBook Pro. The first batch of M1 macs were announced on Nov 10th, 2020, and the 16" MacBook Pro hasn't been refreshed with an M* chip yet, so that will probably happen soon. Yes, at least a few weeks until WWDC 2021. But it also depends on your use case. Seems from this article that 1) New Macbook Pro 16 and 14 likely announced at WWDC in June with a "M1X" SOC 2) New Macbook Air and Mini refresh in the fall with an "M2" SOC M1X > M2 > M1 in terms of pure performance.
