Meh. New tabs are opening in weird places, really faaaar to the right skipping between 6-7 (unrelated) tabs. Really cumbersome to navigate. Horrible selection of extensions still. Really missing searching for any tab with Cmd+Shift+K (I often have ~100 tabs open across multiple windows) that I get with the Tab Switcher extension. There's a Noscript equivalent extension but it costs $3... And I can't initiate a search…
Command+/ will fire up the status bar for Safari which shows you the URLS.

Given the competition for fab capacity at TSMC, I'm not so sure Apple would want to use that capacity to supply servers. If things were less tight in that department I'd agree the time is right.
I can see this playing into the constraints, to this end, perhaps there is efficiency to making the most out of a single system type and assembly? Also do you know how many machines it would take to outfit a reasonable demonstration scale facility? Is that number so large that it constrains the ability to just go that much further?

#934Learning a bit about this in my MBA classes. Cost + Margin = Selling Price. Apple have the capacity to be more of a cost leader now, since they are not subject to the same bargaining power forces of CPU suppliers. As a result, they have the potential to push their costs down (if not now, then in the future once production scales) and increase their margins. A good time to invest, perhaps?

No, the performance issues are real. GC programs have more page demand and higher peak memory use, which is specifically what the iOS memory model (jetsam and memory compression) can't deal with well. They can have some wins due to compacting. There is of course a GC language on iOS (JavaScript) but expensive webpages get killed quickly.
And yet Microsoft was able to do very good phones with GC languages with very good performance for 200 euros, maybe Apple should talk to their runtime engineers.

I've just made a similar switch I went from a Pro (2018 i9 Pro with 32GiB of RAM) to an M1 Air with 16GiB of RAM and its ridiculous. I've tried to look up what this difference might be, but all I've found is a hand-wavey answer about it being an SOC. If someone can ELI5 then I'd be super appreciative.
My feeling is that as everything is on chip, things are physically closer - less lanes on the motherboard - so latency from tasks is lessened. I would not have guessed it would be such a difference though.

We have yet to see any new iPad Pro with the M1. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a difference in clock speed with those.
I don't expect so. The air has no active cooling and can run the M1. Should be doable for the ipad as well.

Late-2012 ivy bridge i5 Mac Mini here. For a dual core machine it's really not all that bad of a daily driver experience. Makes me sad that I have to spend a crazy amount of money to get 16GB of ram and 1TB of SSD in a M1 Mini to match what I currently use. (although I understand the 1TB of SSD in the M1 is vastly superior)
11-inch 2011 MacBook Air here. It's my main machine. I'll turn it into a media server once Apple comes out with an Mx machine with a screen of at least 15 inches.

They tend to support OS releases for three years. Catalina EOL is likely to be sometime in 2022.
I stand corrected. I'd attribute my false confidence to the fact that even the previous version (macOS 10.4 Mojave) is still supported. But now that I think about it that'll likely change at the Apple WWDC in June. Still, decently satisfied with ~10 years of software support for a laptop.
