This is a great read on what it took to make a manuscript. The printing press was one of the great leaps in human history, but the effort savings are not always obvious. This article really lays out just haw laborious the work was prior to the press.

One book I've read in the last few years was Mark Kurlansky's Paper. Just that tiny corner of the story is a remarkably rich bit of history. https://www.dahosek.com/dewey-decimal-project-676-09-kur-pap...
