I doubt they would intentionally limit the internal resolution in order to obtain a high maximum external resolution.

You're forgetting about the Pro Display XDR.

They want to make sure their 6k display is supported across their entire lineup. Even the M1 Air supports it.

M1 has on-package RAM and limited to two chips thereof. I’ve read that in theory they could use the 12GB version thereof and get to 24GB but choose not to.

This is the benefit of Apple's policy of only announcing products when they're ready. It prevents bad publicity if there's a delay and also prevents people waiting to buy the upcoming product and waiting and not buying available ones.

The "good monitor" part is the problem, especially if you try to replicate the iMac feel (24" 4K+).

Will have to add good Speakers too. Apparently doesn’t look that expensive now.

As a developer who moved from a 16gb Intel MBP to an 8gb Air, I see no difference at all. I think a combination of the nature of the SOC and the massively faster retain/release cycle just make it much less of an issue. Using that much swap frequently sounds like it might wear out your ssd early(thrashing)

It's really thin, so to fit the motherboard etc. Also to fit the six speaker sound system.

I also heard that rumour about the ports, but I'm not sure I'm entirely convinced with them releasing this new iMac with only USB-C ports. If their desktop Mac doesn't have ports, why would their laptop?

As I said in another comment, M1 seems to be severely I/O-limited. The M1 Mac Mini even has an internal USB hub iirc to solve this. It's safe to say that the next generation of SoCs will be better in this regard.

Because in this case you can replace the keyboard and keep it secure, which contains the Touch ID sensor.

The keyboard probably has a T2 or similar chip, or even basically an apple watch without a screen.

Two months until someone runs Doom on that :)

The New Balance refer to the fact that I'm old and crusty. I work in engineering but am not a software developer (majority of folks here are). Running Red Hat makes you old, too,

The classic New Balance shoes have looked the same since the 1970s. That’s just a weird flex.

The fact that's effectively the same price as the M1 Air is interesting. Like the Air it's a very good deal, and it'll put other all-in-ones on notice.
