Is them releasing a keyboard (detached and presumably replaceable) with a Touch ID sensor basically an admission that the iPhone Touch ID did NOT have to be permanently paired to the phone to keep it secure?

Because in this case you can replace the keyboard and keep it secure, which contains the Touch ID sensor.

I do this on my MacBookPro. I keep my headphones plugged in. I have the system sound go via the Mac speakers. And I have zoom set to use the headphones.

It’s easy to switch between built in speakers, wired headphones and AirPods. All with unplugging anything.

As a developer who moved from a 16gb Intel MBP to an 8gb Air, I see no difference at all. I think a combination of the nature of the SOC and the massively faster retain/release cycle just make it much less of an issue. That said, I did straight up run out of RAM the other day, but my editor was chewing up something like 32gb of swap. Still no slowdown, though. (I suspect a memory leak, it's very new software)

I can’t use one with less than 16gb because iPhone or Android simulator will chew up memory.

24" devices are tiny - I'd consider 27" to be a reasonable size and 32" to be optimal for detailed work or for aged eyes. I suspect this device is targeted towards kids and students (as evidenced by the colours and the choice of voice actor), and Apple wants adults and workers to buy a (more expensive) future iMac Pro with a bigger screen.

This is a stupid take–24" is fine for plenty of professional workers.

I think it's worth it. I'm at the point where I think any non apple laptop is a waste of money. I own a software consultancy and charge about $700 a day for my time. My MacBook regularly has uptimes of over a month. Sometimes I work in an office with people using Windows machines. Sometimes their bluetooth earphones won't connect. The mic doesn't work on Zoom sometimes. Doesn't wake from sleep. Things like that. That…

I totally feel you on the Apple store part. That's another feature that is very tempting to me. Anything break? Fine, drive straight to the Apple store and get it taken care of.

Seems like it's the same as the M1 MacBook Air and Pro.

Those new iMacs look really lovely. They should be a perfect desktop for many users. At 24inch, the screen is large enough, the M1 powerful, silent and also doesn't use a lot of electricity. With all environment concerns, the electricity usage of computers should not be overlooked.

I am very happy to see the return of colors, love that! But white bezels around the screen? Those are a bit of a no go for me.

And of course: why still no video in, especially with such a great screen. In times of home-office, it would be so great if you could connect your work laptop to your iMac for video output. I might have gotten one just to replace my dell 24" 4k screen (they are getting rare, seems to be basically the only screen with almost 200dpi on the market). (A Vesa-mount option would be great too, especially considering thow small and light the iMac is)
