Ask HN: How to become a 'Domain Expert' as a programmer?

#1
I'm coming from several years of Development experience, followed by a couple years of Cloud Operations experience. I haven't learned anything about any of the businesses I've worked for, and kinda feel like a commodity.

I've become somewhat by being purely focused on technology. How would I turn from a 'generic backend programmer' into a 'biotech expert who also programs', for example? I'd like to turn my job less into writing code and more into solving business problems, and possibly write the code as well.

Great idea. My advice would be to find something you're really, truly passionate about and pursue it all the way down. Become a master and a teacher. You will learn so much on the journey, and you can use your wisdom to help others and support yourself at the same time.

Good luck!
