Not everyone had the same opportunities to know better afforded by a world-class education and extensive travel abroad. Not everyone continued to say these "regrettable" things well into the 21st century. Not everyone was aware that they had a platform by which their words might have an amplified effect.

Judging the past by contemporary politics doesn't make much sense. The present and the past are separate contexts.

I agree.

Just a short sampling, mostly from before 2000 although more can be found in other articles: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/may/04/prince-phili...

Also a well documented racist. Of course more of the obituaries are leaving that out and bending words to avoid that... examples I've seen: (Source: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Sg_lsY_Y-RoED3IjAjZR... ) - "with off-the-cuff remarks that were called oblivious, insensitive or worse." - "The duke could be blunt and outspoken to the point of offensiveness" - "his unfiltered remarks and attempts at humor becam…

Well he was born in the 1920s. Nearly everyone born in that time would be considered racist or sexist since those terms were basically unheard of before the 1960s. I don’t really see what’s the use of condemning him given that, you ought to recognize that his generation intentionally cultivated your generation of anti-racists and anti-sexists.

They can leave whenever they want. Golden handcuffs are not actual handcuffs.

Do you ever really leave? No matter what you do, the media will be after you. Not a day of complete peace of mind.

There are many low-profile Royals. Some I never ever hear about.

Unfortunately, Meghan seems to have captured the imagination for some reason.

We should have a designated shit talker on everyone's wake. Someone who only purpose is to bring every bad word said, bad deeds, remember the unreturned books or any item.

Ah yes! Unreturned book and racism are in same league of shit-talking. Just another art of down-playing the severity of actions/words by comparing it with something mundane.

> every bad word said, bad deeds

I suggest reading the whole comment before replying.

It's pretty blindingly obvious from the whole context that "unreturned books" is meant to be sarcastic.

The question I want answered is, if she lives to 100 will she send a card to herself?

Her royal assistant will get stuck in a loop sending thank you for contacting the queen messages

And the halting theorem says there is nothing to be done about it!

Judging the past by contemporary politics doesn't make much sense. The present and the past are separate contexts.

However, judging recent history by contemporary politics absolutely makes sense

He did more for me than I did for him.

I couldn't agree more. That's true of anyone who served in WW2 of course, from naval officer to an RMP like my grandfather, but that doesn't diminish his contribution.

They are just figureheads these days. No role in politics aside from ceremonial. They draw in crowds of tourists to the UK, and they aren’t that expensive to maintain. Their £67m yearly grant[1] works out to about £1/year per person in the UK. That’s pretty cheap for a fantastic PR service. Yes there is probably added costs on top like police/security but overall/net they don’t feel like a massive burden on the finan…

The French Republic is the number 1 tourist destination in the world. The UK is number 10 with less than half as many visitors. The only other monarchies in the top 10 are Spain and Thailand.[1] [1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Tourism_rankings

So what you are saying is without the monarchy more or less people would visit the UK?

London hosts more visitors than Paris[1], although France overall hosts more visitors than the UK.

Extremely famous people frequently "author" books, usually with ghostwriters. Charles' book is credit to him "with" two other people (Tony Juniper and Ian Skelly who, I suspect, did most of the heavy lifting. Charles has for years been sympathetic to all sorts of woo, such as "alternative" medicine; his book was met with broad criticism for its cherry-picking of scientific findings to support his environmental agenda…

I don't think there is such a thing as 'alternative medicine'. There is medicine, and there is not-medicine. Just like there is treatment and there is not-treatment. Calling things 'alternative' puts them on the same level, which they are not.

“You know what they call alternative medicine that's been proved to work? - Medicine.”

I think that's the point of the person you replied to. An exceedingly minor issue such as "unreturned books" is used for sarcastic effect, but that implication that we should treat library loan violators in this way seems to indicate that our view of library loans should somehow be tied to or maintain consistency with our view of publicly espousing racism and/or sexism.
