Ask HN: Is it wise to create pre-launch/coming soon page for future product?

I've been working on a product (a web simulation game of sorts) for some time now, and I have a soft deadline that I set for myself to launch it. That date will be between 1st and 15th of June. I'm wondering, is it smart to create some kind of coming soon page, where people can leave their mail and be notified about it?

Also, if that would be the move, how much would you reveal on that 'coming soon' webpage? Would it be a logo and a 'signup' box with something really vague, like a tagline, or more?

I have the whole landing page already made, with a value prop written, few examples and what the product is about.

Assuming June will be your Alpha/Beta testing launch date then I would think now is a good time to start promoting.

I wouldn't depend solely on a landing page either, now would be the time to get Your social media ducks in a row, have your distribution plan worked out, create or decide on EULA agreements and make up both Time and Financial budgets for the run up to your hard launch date.

Don't forget about documentation/tutorials either, if You manage to aquire a user/player don't lose that value because they don't "get it" or find it difficult to "get it".

Just my 2 cents but it might be valuable to look into all the different types of employees a successful software company has on their payroll. That should help You prepare before things ramp up and You're UTG.
