Except for the cow.

You could say the same thing for plants right? They probably don't want to be eaten.

The argument has never been that it's only ok for humans to live if we do zero harm. It's obvious that we can't do that. And that's fine. Human life is worth much more than anything else for us humans, so eating something to survive is necessary and ethical. Same logic applies also to vaccines that need animal products in production. I would prefer if they wouldn't, but I'm not judging anyone for taking it.

What we're talking about here is that simply because steak is s bit tastier than tofu or saitan isn't good enough reason to slaughter 50 billion animals per year and destroying a good amount of environment while doing it.

Is beyond meat actually healthier than meat? If you search my question you’ll see the results are hardly conclusive. What’s everyone’s take?

Personally, I very much doubt it. Meat is an ancient food. We've evolved as hunter-gatheres, with most of our calories coming from hunting. It would be very surprising if we were not well-adapted to eating a lot of meat. Modern hunter-gatherer tribes which eat a lot of meat, like the Hadza, have excellent health. Something like Beyond Meat is novel; it may well be OK, but I'd certainly exercise a lot of caution befor…

How anyone thinks some corporate processed meat is healthy than natural animal meat/fats that we have eaten since forever, makes me feel like I am living in crazy land.

People are probably so sick right now that they can't taste the difference, nor is their mind healthy enough to comprehend how ludicrous the proposition is.

Respectfully, you and most people have no clue what plants experience. There were those studies published in recent years that suggested plants "scream" when they are being eaten or destroyed, presumably to warn other plants.

This is ridiculous. Consciousness may be mysterious, but the fact that something emits sound when you break it doesn’t bring it into the same ethical domain as cows and other mammals with brains and an obvious desire and ability to avoid pain and death.

Nice cop out. Plants have feelings too man.

This is the best news I've heard all week. The more widely vegan "meat" is available, the more likely it is to be adopted by average people and not just dedicated vegans. Reducing the demand for real beef is probably one of the best things we can do in the short term for the environment, due to the amount of land required for cattle farming, and due to the surprising amount of methane emitted by cattle. (see the docu…

Unless there is a health benefit, why would normal people adopt vegan meat? Impossible meat has just as much fat and other bad things compared to real meat, I’m not sure why would be interested in it. If we replace cattle grazing by more plant growing, what are we going to do with the marginal land that is arable enough for grazing but not for growing things? It’s not like neveda is going to be able to switch from ca…

People who care for animals but don't want to give up the taste of meat come to mind

Oh god. I’ve seen the future. That reminds me of a certain college campus food service that signed an exclusive contract with Coke. Coke brand milk. Coke brand grade D but edible meat (we found the box in the dumpster). Hell, they even f———ed up the soft drinks because they had hyper-optimized machines that mixed corn syrup, citric acid, flavor, co2 and water on site. The mix, and therefore PH, was frequently so far…

> machines that mixed corn syrup, citric acid, flavor, co2 and water on site This is how all fountain drinks work. Concentrate, water and pressurized CO2 canisters. > Coke brand milk. Well, it’s a drink company... > Coke brand grade D but edible meat Hard nope from me. At any grade.

Most fountains don’t trust the operator to mix the citric acid and corn syrup as two separate streams from the other ingredients. (At least they didn’t at the time. The big computerized ones might do that these days; but those are probably self calibrating.)

The corn consumed by cattle includes the corn stalks which are more or less the same as consuming grass. Corn is after all in the grass family. The actual kernels of corn increase the calories versus grass, but it’s not like cows are just eating corn off the cob all day long. They need to consume tons of roughage to help with their digestion. I think a good argument is that converting grain and grass to beef is ineff…

It is well documented that once cows are switched to the pure corn diets we now feed them, their health starts immediately declining and they start dying. Factory farms time it so that they grow up on grass and similar, then are switched to grain to fatten them, and are slaughtered before becoming too ill. There are many unhealthy modifications made to their diet and environment to force them to consume corn. This is…

The same happens when humans switch to a largely corn diet. Corn and wheat (maybe just grains) just don't seam healthy.

If I had to drop meat, I'd primarily eat beans/legumes.

if they slip that shit in their food without telling us I will be very upset.

What I think is worse.

Is that they call it "meat".

People who aren't that switched on will start eating it, when there is no proof it is actually good for you.

I'd like to see a 10-20 year study before we just accept that Beyond Meat is actually good for long term health.

Supermarkets are putting this stuff in the "meat" section too.

Poor old person who can barely see that actually needs real tried and test nutrition.

Kind of evil if you ask me but that is why this comment is at the very bottom.

Speak for yourself. Nothing can beat an oily, greasy In N Out beef burger with processed American "Cheese" on top of something that barely resembles beef, but you can't say it isn't the best thing you've ever tasted!

I never liked In N Out myself. Not even in comparison to other fast food, nevermind "the best thing I've ever tasted," that's laughable. I'd rather have a double from Wendy's and MUCH rather have something like Five Guys or Shake Shack.

None of those four chains use frozen beef.

Just when you think there is no hope for this planet and for humanity something slowly emerges seemingly out of nowhere. Fridays for future was one of those developments that caught me by surprise. Young people fighting for our planet while „angry white men“ claiming there ain’t no climate change. Or take the sudden surge of interest in everything veggy / vegan. In Germany there is a growing demand for vegan products…

> In Germany there is a growing demand for vegan products, and this demand seems to be very strong, because every grocery store has a growing number of vegan products lately. As somebody who used to live there, I think this has more to do with the Zeitgeist. Most Germans feel nowadays that one should cause no harm, no offensiveness, and be completely environmentally & socially sound. Which sounds great on paper, but…

To be fair, it’s like that everywhere now.

Beyond Meat is not like tofu or so, it is designed to be unrecognizable from meat by tasting it - so you won't have to give on our beloved meat. I also don't want to go with a vegan diet just because "environment", but having a reasonably priced substituent which does not contain tortured animals and has lower env. impact - then just why not.

Beeyond is not like real meat at all, it's just more obviously "imitation meat" than soy. I don't know why fast restaurants don't just serve tofu like Asian restaurants -- it's cheaper and tastes just as good when they cook in a sauce. USA mass culture's fear of tofu is bizarre.

I like tofu, despite a soy allergy that causes me unfortunate issues, but tofu isn't anything like meat. A lot of recipes are built around meat and its qualities. It makes sense to offer folks a choice. If people wanted tofu, people would be selling more tofu.
