Yeah and the health arguments tend to fall apart when you get into fast-food/highly processed crap territory, which probably accounts for a large portion of meat consumption in the developed world. Eating less of that stuff is probably a good thing. That said quality meat is a good source of various nutrients and amino acids that can be difficult to get from plant-based sources, and fish in particular can be farmed v…
> fast-food/highly processed crap territory, which probably accounts for a large portion of meat consumption in the developed world A large portion of animal by-products, almost certainly. I doubt that a lot of what fast-food joints use, would be considered "meat" before it was processed. Nobody is asking their local butcher for the Cows eyeballs and asshole.

I truly don't understand the methane issue. Historically worldwide the # of ungulates is probably well below historical averages. It looks like today we have around 98 million head of cattle in the US. Historically we had bison in excess of conservatively 60 million. This doesn't even begin to count all the animals in Africa. Overall wide life is declining. https://www.statista.com/statistics/194297/total-number-of-c…
Wild life mammals are simply negligible compared to our livestock: https://xkcd.com/1338/

#624I prefer the taste of impossible but this is great news for the category.
I agree, Beyond overdoes the fake smoke flavor. But they seem to be better equipped to scale up than Impossible, they've beaten them to mass market in almost every location I've seen.

How on Earth did we end up having so many ingredients in what essentially is just pizza. The food industry really has gone too far by over-processing everything.
What are the issues with those ingredients?
never heard of it = bad
can't pronounce it = bad
thinking = brain hurt

>when you add up every hot pocket, frozen pizza, slider, hot dog, or chicken nugget, it's hard to argue that most of meat actually being consumed can't be easily substituted. For something healthier and cheaper too! Read the labels more closely the next time you eat that hot pocket or frozen sausage pizza. A large number of these products already have "textured vegetable protein" (TVP) or other meat substitute in the…

Just because you believe this doesn’t make it true. Do you think a pack of coyotes tearing apart a newborn deer is unethical too? Do you think farming grains and vegetables is without impact on wildlife?
Humans have moral agency, and most importantly, do not need meat to survive in 2020. Which is different than wild coyotes. Veganism according to the vegan society: https://www.vegansociety.com/go-vegan/definition-veganism > "Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpo…
Uh, where do you think Vegan friendly foods are grown? Do you realize that the earth must be cultivated to grow the vast majority of these foods? Do you think farmers of these foods take kindly to crop damage from wild animals?
Beef cattle do not require farmed grain, in fact many graze only beef farms exist and the practice continues to gain popularity.
I respect your choice to be Vegan, please respect my choice to reject lab grown goop.

#629I really wanted to like Beyond Meat, but there's something about how it smells that seems... off... to me. I really want to go work there just to play with a GCMS and figure out what component smells bad to me and remove it. Personally, I think the epitome of vegan meat replacement is Morningstar Veggie Breakfast Patties. most meat eaters I know who try them say "huh... this is pretty damn good for something that doe…

I've consumed a lot of Beyond and Impossible, and it's good! But still a far way from unrecognizable. In fact, one thing they have made me appreciate is how good some of the "traditional" meat substitutes are. I actually quite like Boca and Garden Burgers et al! Still, the once or twice a year I go to a steakhouse and get a nice medium rare steak - we're a long, long way off from that.
I know it's slightly different, but the goal is to be the same. And actually, if I were to decide whether the meat in Mc Donald's burgers or nuggets is real, I'd just say no - it is much further from a "real" burger / nugget than I'd say about beyond.
