This is a very hot take! If you believe this, you should oppose all measures to conserve energy, and advocate for dumping as much energy into the atmosphere as heat waste as possible. There’s nothing about the argument that applies to crypto more than any other energy use.
Energy dumped as heat into the atmosphere does nothing bad to the climate. And I am not particularly for any energy conservation measures. Except for isolating buildings because most dirty stuff we burn is for that purpose and not isolating your home is just negligence. Wasting electrical energy is only bad because it came from burning stuff. But I don't think any fossil fuel power plant was closed because people use…

Coal plants are indeed closing because they are no longer profitable. Natural gas is the main “on-demand” power source, and plants raise and lower production based on demand. Increased power consumption will delay the transition away from coal, and keep natural gas plants running more often.

#393I would normally be appalled by such an action, but the supply issues for RTX 30x0 cards are beyond ridiculous. Mining trashes the environment and, for the majority of crypto assets/volumes, does not provide genuinely valuable economic activity besides speculation (I say that as someone who has put thousands of dollars into crypto in the past). Why should people who want to try some ML/DL at home (maybe they even nee…
Just wait until they'll limit ML/DL using those heuristics because you're supposed to buy specialized hardware and let gamers play their games. First they came for the miners, and I did not speak out.

#394Sounds like it's time to crack some NVIDIA drivers. I already do it for the video encoding limitations, why not this too? Miners are willing to go to some really hacky extremes, reflashing firmwares, custom fan mods, extreme overclock configurations, etc to maximize hashrates and certainly won't care if they have to jump through some hoops to patch a specific version of the Linux driver or enable unsigned drivers on…

#396It's nice that Nvidia gets to artificially restrict what I can do with their products after I buy them. I had this problem years ago...I bought a USB video adapter to enable using a second screen while my main screen was running games...they had code in the driver to disable things like physx if a second display was detected.

Someone's out there digging ethereum out of the wall of a cave? Panning for it in a river delta? No? Then it's a calculation. Or an abstract and useless one in your terms.
It's a calculation, but not a useless one done just to simulate gold mining, unlike Bitcoin. Look deeper into what Ethereum actually is, it's not just a cryptocoin, it's also a computing platform.
I don’t have an opinion on this but if you’re making a point, you should be the one providing evidence, not telling others to look it up.

Someone with early access to 3060 hardware, but not access to the launch drivers managed to wrangle it into working on pre-3060 drivers and still found that mining performance was artificially reduced. It starts high then falls off after a minute or so when some heuristic decides that mining is happening. https://videocardz.com/newz/zotac-geforce-rtx-3060-early-gpu... There's speculation that the limiter might actual…
So we’ll see mod chips for GPUs soon?
