Good. This is exactly what I want. Make hash crunching meaningless on a gaming GPU and tell the people mining black market money to go buy an ASIC if they want to mine. Also stop selling on Amazon and Newegg and push the supply to physical stores. Computing tech need to come together and make amazon agree to banning scalper selling. Either it's sold at price or lower or not at all.

This is a very hot take! If you believe this, you should oppose all measures to conserve energy, and advocate for dumping as much energy into the atmosphere as heat waste as possible. There’s nothing about the argument that applies to crypto more than any other energy use.

Coal plants are indeed closing because they are no longer profitable. Natural gas is the main “on-demand” power source, and plants raise and lower production based on demand. Increased power consumption will delay the transition away from coal, and keep natural gas plants running more often.

If I recall correctly; they already do this by really limiting mixed precision performance on the GeForce line. I believe Titans typically where excluded, but otherwise for full FP16 support you needed a Quadro or Tesla card.

Miners are willing to go to some really hacky extremes, reflashing firmwares, custom fan mods, extreme overclock configurations, etc to maximize hashrates and certainly won't care if they have to jump through some hoops to patch a specific version of the Linux driver or enable unsigned drivers on…
Its not question if miners can/will crack it at some point (yes, they can). Question is how many miners will order the cards on day 0 without knowing if they can be used? The intention here is only to deter them enough that gamers have at least slightly better chance of getting these cards, and especially for launch-day orders.

I had this problem years ago...I bought a USB video adapter to enable using a second screen while my main screen was running games...they had code in the driver to disable things like physx if a second display was detected.

It's a calculation, but not a useless one done just to simulate gold mining, unlike Bitcoin. Look deeper into what Ethereum actually is, it's not just a cryptocoin, it's also a computing platform.

So let’s wait until BTC hits $100k and a generic videocard for any purpose costs $5000. That would be much better than paying extra $200 over MSRP for ML. /s
