When will they be generally available if I preorder now?
I'd love to have Starlink for camping excursions this summer in areas where I can't even get cell service.

Correct. These places aren’t getting fiber or strong 4G/5G connections. Have you visited rural towns?
I live outside of a rural town on 29 acres and my 4G gets 4Mpbs and my WISP provides 20Mbps. It’s no Google Fiber, but it’s enough to let my wife and me both work remotely and be on video calls most of every workday. That said, I just signed up for Starlink because it’s faster and cheaper than my WISP, and hopefully more reliable. Right now we get a few minutes of dropped connection a few times per day.
The WISP reliability shouldn’t be that bad. (It’s not the radio’s fault.). Either there’s a tree branch or flimsy pole breaking the connection in the wind, or some backend network issue.

yes, if you look globally. Just usa ? Not sure. But i think that they would have to become ISP and comply with local law with most jurisdictions if they want to have local ground stations. Not sure how that will go.
Who do you imagine will buy it on a global scale? Rural NA areas, rural Australian areas and a few places in Europe. At the price point offered it is insanely expensive unless your only other option is satelite or a very crappy DSL. Maybe a few people in Asia, Africa, South America can afford it, but it is very few, and in the places where people can they are likely to already have better service.
You do realize you could have tried the same argument about cell phones when they first came out. No-one in those poorer countries would buy the same cell phone my dad (real estate agent) had in his car, the cost would run up to $1000 a month, but he made good commission selling factory properties.
Today every where in the poorest parts of the world are connected with cell phones.

So whom ever gets there first makes the rules? However if this is not suppped to be a joke then this is absolutely insane. There is no way humans, other then maybe a few austranouts will make it to mars in the next 20 years by which this service will be obsolete or no longer exist. The latter. You can initiate whatever connection you want from inside the cgnat, but there's nothing externally accessible yet. Mine has a few different openvpn tunnels (clients at the starlink side, servers in datacenters elsewhere) going different places.

#469Just placed a pre-order in north Georgia. Right now, tethering cellular is my best option. The local ISP is like 3Mb/s, and Hughesnet has a really low datacap.

#470Curious to see how this plays out in a country like mine (India) where the government loves [1] to shut off Internet access on the flimsiest of excuses. Everything from entire states (like Kashmir), to few localities (farmer protests around Delhi) have had their mobile Internet access switched off because the government likes to curtail communication when it suits them.
