Besides that, they can still run gitlab on-prem (it's not that hard after all). So it's not like gitlab is completely cutting people out of service.

Reasonable for the user would be to just grandfather them in their current plan.

Reasonable for GitLab, but not the user. Reasonable for the user would be to just grandfather them in their current plan.
edit: it amazes me that companies don't do this time and time again and suffer the negative repercussions of it every time.
