> This would be an issue, but I dispute point 1 because the leaders of the tech industry would very much like to wash their hands of politics and be seen as neutral platforms so they can save money on moderation. No, they'd like to be approachable by the broadest groups possible (or really the broadest set of ad-viewing groups possible). Calls to violence are unappealing to most people. This is the reason unmoderated…

So why didn't they crackdown on this type of content back in the Obama administration when the threat of political blowback also wasn't there?

What type of content?

Unfortunately, I don't think it can be avoided - you can't have freedom of speech without having the worst of the worst be able to speak. I dislike the people that support facist, racist beliefs, but I 100% will defend their right to say such things. In my opinion, once you start talking about restricting speech, you get into the grey area - who decides what speech to restrict? Off the top of my head, the most "capab…

I worry less about having the worst of the worst speak, as it is platforms inevitably trend extreme as folks either drop off or are pushed out and the result is just a one sided platform without some heavy handed moderation. Here's I think the real issue, we make discussion platforms... people don't want to discuss. They just want to put up and push posters of what they believe. And we're surprised when things go wro…

I think I partially agree. It does not help that we are bombarded daily with variations of 'our side is awesome and the other side is the devil'. With sufficient indoctrination, it becomes less about discussion, but about spreading the belief further. It practically becomes a religion.

The other day, we talked with family members and all I heard was slogans (the 'energy independent','damn socialists' type ). And it is hard to talk about it, because you have to start by dispelling the slogans and that alone is an hour of deprogramming ( assuming you have receptive audience ). I gave up on that challenge.

And I feel like I failed there, because we DO need to discuss things. We will most assuredly not agree, but need to stop taking our news from one source. Diverse diet is probably the only way to go.

> The left now has the Senate and the Presidency. The key term is "now". After getting about 40m more votes. Be honest. Is that balanced?

Was just pointing out it's quite clear that the nation itself is left leaning. That's honest by the numbers. To say the Republicans have any kind of advantage right now except for maybe the courts is incorrect.

They had to lose by 7 million votes to actually lose, I would say they have quite advantage.

As another user said: "The Senate is split 50-50, but the 50 Democrats represent 41 million more people than the 50 Republicans"

The 'free speech platforms' almost always skew towards the extremest side (more so over time)and aren't anything about the benefits we think of when it comes to free speech, lots of ideas that can be discussed, and we can think about and learn from. I wonder how that can be avoided.

Even if allowing fascists and racists to express their speech actively harms or silences you in turn?

You can not seriously argue the EC doesn't matter when the republicans have won the popular vote once since 1988 yet have held the presidency for 3 terms.

It's just a bunch of State puppets who do the State's bidding in almost all cases. Each state gets numbers by its population. Great. Forefathers intended it this way. I think that's fair. It stops a giant mob from overpowering the system. Unless you take over the Post office and use it as a voting system, which dems clearly did here. I don't think a direct democracy would work in the US. I like representative democra…

> Each state gets numbers by its population.

This is false, and the core of the criticism of the EC. Each state gets 2 votes independent of its population, which is biased toward small population states, and for over a century the definition of states was constrained by a compromise to protect slavery.

What does it mean, concretely, to "wake up" to this realization? I certainly acknowledge that Amazon might make bad content moderation decisions in the future, and if they do I'll speak out against those decisions. I just don't follow why I'd need to do something about that today.

Because the insurrection on capitol hill provides the cover of legitimacy for people to act in a manner that also may be very inconsistent and politicized. Jeff Bezos owns news publications, he has a worldview and likes to flaunt it to some extent, moreover, these systems are prone to the possibility of arbitrary, and often political decisions. Note that historically, rich dudes bought newspapers to attack their poli…

A few months ago, Emmanuel Macron's government deported hundreds of people and closed at least a dozen mosques for extremism. So it's pretty hard to view his statement as a general endorsement of free speech, rather than a dispute about who gets to decide to restrict it. (That's not to say their position is unreasonable; I just don't agree with their implicit assumption that the government can be better trusted to use the power of speech restrictions fairly.)

not to take away from your point and be too pedantic, but i think maybe left and liberal are being conflated? actual bonafide leftists have very little real political power in ths u.s afaik...

Yeah, as far as I can tell, America doesn't have any meaningful left-wing politics of any kind. There's not a single left politician elected to any federal office anywhere in the nation, for example. Hollywood (the industry funded by the US Military to put pro-military-industrial-state advertisements into movies) is not "left leaning" in any meaningful way. "News Media" all lean either slight-right (MSNBC, NPR) to ha…

This is silly. Sanders is left. AOC is left. Many are left-leaning.

No one advocates a monarchy either, but that doesn't mean no one is "right-leaning".

Can you explain?

Sure, I'll circle back with a longer form response in a few minutes. In the meantime, I find it interesting that people think down voting my comment will intimidate me into changing the analysis. That's not how legal judgment works. That's not how anything works...

If you actually offered an analysis that demonstrated your expertise you would have probably gotten upvotes instead of downvotes.

What do you mean by saying that democrats took over the post office? I assume you mean the USPS? The postmaster general was appointed by Trump. The senate until just last week had a Republican majority. Exactly how did the Democrats exercise power to "take over"?
