#2Token counterpoint so they don't just appear to be stooges in America's culture wars...but I really don't believe either of Merkel or Macron is truly interested in anything but a totally sanitized and nerfed internet.
The good news is we are seeing a new reality - internet "power" is useless. Your pithy, massively-upvoted comment on reddit doesn't move the needle anymore. This was the real lesson of the Capitol riots...keyboard warriors will need to get out of their chairs.

#5I grew up believing that the US was unique in that we unequivocally allow free speech.
I realize that recent events are a different sort of animal, but it's a bit surreal having other countries lecture us on the importance of freedom of speech. Even if they may be justified in doing so.
