Dumb as green paint, but, I secretly hope this type of stuff, that has been living just under the surface of the internet, comes to the surface for all to see plain as day.

I think there will be a time when even the average user is conscious of the route his or her packets take, and the events that can occur during that transitory period.

At a certain point the line of absurdity has been crossed at it is not the duty of society to constantly debunk illegitimate claims. > The other side keeps deplatforming them In this particular case, Parler has been host to a num…

Yes, that is what reddit, twitter and Hacker News reinforce constantly. It's either because it's true, or because the other side has been repeatedly discouraged from adding their two cents in those communities. I've been seeing the world through this lens for so long that I can't tell. I find it somewhat implausible that half the population is dumb, racist and all those other labels. It seems much more likely that I…

It's not half the population but a significant portion of people are really that dumb and racist. We just need to figure out how to avoid them getting programmed like this.

Imagine owning a phone that can only get content approved by Apple and can cancel you for any arbitrary reason. Its like buying a radio that can only listen to democrats approved stations, its ridiculous and yet the fanboys will defend their shitty practices no matter what

You're trying to skate over the difference between good-faith political debate and bad-faith encouragement of violence and sedition. Diverse dissenting views are fine. Plotting armed violence to overturn a legitimate election result isn't. If the far-right can't operate without plotting armed violence - and there's plenty of evidence it can't - then it puts itself outside the reach of any free speech arguments. Not j…

"Plotting armed violence to overturn a legitimate election result isn't"

There are already laws and means to deal with plotting armed violence. None of them include (or should include) banning the phone company / app company / phone maker / etc.

We should be careful with sweeping generalizations, especially when in this case, it may rob us of the opportunity to achieve reconciliation via frank discussions with people of opposing views. Most people that voted for Donald Trump are not Nazis. Most people on Parler are not Nazis. Most of the protests over the past several years were not violent.

Which is why Apple is saying to Parler "Remove the Nazis and you can stay" rather than immediately removing it. If it is removed, it is because Parler felt allowing Nazis to use their platform was important enough to have their app removed.

The only chance in hell this country has of surviving is if Republicans widely condemn Trump's behavior and make an example of other agitators like Rudy Giuliani and Alex Jones who whipped these people into a frenzy. If there are no consequences, they'll only get the message that they can do whatever they want and things will only get worse.

If the agitators are not imprisoned for a long time, there will be no chance for peace in this country. And any insurrectionists storming government buildings must be shot on sight next time, as the combatants they are. Wouldn't shed a tear, the alternative is to become another Afghanistan. The fake Thomas Paines here need to understand that we are at WAR. If you care about this country, this shit has to be put down…

> The fake Thomas Paines here need to understand that we are at WAR. If you care about this country, this shit has to be put down mercilessly.

Just like all the BLM / Antifa shit this summer? Or is it only when it's the other side causing trouble that people need shot on sight?

Absolutely. The only reason Parler is getting banned and Facebook isn't is because Facebook is too big to fail. Facebook and Twitter have the same amount of questionable content, just better PR and bigger clout.

Facebook and Twitter actively remove such content. Does Parler?

I've seen Parler moderate content, perhaps not very quickly due to it being a small company.

It's Gab that has no moderation (with all the pros and cons of a pure "free speech" network).

Just ban it and don't let it back, lets be done with this.

Moving the discourse further away from the light won't help cure the divide in this country. We need more discussion, not less. We need to get both sides talking to each other not to themselves about each other.

Do we? Most discussions in comment sections between people of different persuasions tend to be toxic and abusive these days. when moderators attempt to impose standards of civility there's a chorus of complaints about 'censorship'. There have to be limits to patience with bad-faith dialog, otherwise you're just enabling trolls and abusive people.

A for-profit corporation like Apple shouldnt be the arbitrer of what constitutes good-faith and bad-faith political debate

You're proposing to remove a very large, very alienated group's last public channel to express themselves peacefully. This risks further escalation. This is compounded with the stark contrast to how the protests were handled this summer.

It’s the opposite, before the Internet groups of nutcases could not organise themselves around fascist ideas as easily as today. We have the president suggesting crazy conspiracy theories that half the US population believe. Half the US population don’t wear masks as a political statement. I think someone made a wise connection between the downward spiral of public education standards and where we are today. These pe…

> Half the US population don’t wear masks as a political statement

This is just wrong and a sloppy way to insult "half the US population". This sort of attitude contributes to the tribalism that is creating so much division.

Someone brought an interesting perspective in another thread and I can't shake it off. The other side keeps deplatforming them. Their legal cases are rejected. The mainstream media refuses to take them seriously. We're not even listening to them, because it's science and they're *ists if they disagree. We're not debating anymore. We just assume we're right. We are slowly squeezing a significant segment of the populat…

What is “the other route”? They are being deplatformed because their speech is violent and damaging—in many cases it’s literal incitement to violence. Their legal cases are being rejected because they have no legal merit. The mainstream media refuse to take them seriously because they have again and again shown themselves to be bad faith actors, peddlers of unsubstantiated conspiracy, outright liars, and so on. I don…

But the thing with these sweeping generalizations of "them" as being violent and damaging is - who gets to define what is violent and damaging?

Glenn Greenwald, who I respect a lot and was instrumental in breaking the mass surveillance in US by intelligence agencies recently spoke about these very issue:

" My insistence that we look at the other side of the ledger — the costs and dangers not only from such attacks but also the “solutions” implemented in the name of the stopping them — did not come from indifference towards those deaths or a naive views of those responsible for them. It was instead driven by my simultaneous recognition of the dangers from rights-eroding, authoritarian reactions imposed by the state, particularly in the immediate aftermath of a traumatic event. "

and then this:

"

It has long been clear that, in the post-Trump era, media outlets looking to keep viewers hooked, and government officials looking to increase their power, will do everything possible to center and inflate the threat posed by right-wing factions. I’ve said this more times than I can count over the last year at least.

Like all inflated threats, this one has a kernel of truth. As is true of every faction, there are right-wing activists filled with rage and who are willing to do violence. Some of them are dangerous (just as some Muslims in the post-9/11 era, and some Antifa nihilists, were and are genuinely violent and dangerous). But as was true of the Cold War and the War on Terror and so many other crisis-spurred reactions, the other side of the ledger — the draconian state powers clearly being planned and urged and prepared in the name of stopping them — carry its own extremely formidable dangers.

Refusing to consider those dangers for fear of standing accused of downplaying the threat is the most common tactic authoritarian advocates of state power use. Less than twenty-four hours after the Capitol breach, one sees this tactic being wielded with great flamboyance and potency, and it is sure to continue long after January 20. "
