I don't understand what people don't get about the 1st amendment. A right to free speech, is set in stone in the US Constitution, a private company can enforce their own censorship, but having a company that wants to have the 1st amendment and is being forced to be shut down is not what the US is about. Threats and actions to commit treason should be handled by authorities and prosecuted. But someone saying they don'…

Are you saying that Apple should be compelled to help Parler and amplify their speech/give them a platform?

There's an amusing irony in the downvotes in this thread. The champions of free-speech angry that Apple might ban a platform for speech that ultimately led to an attempted insurrection? These champions of free speech seem to be agressively trying to silence anybody happy about this news.

You're proposing to remove a very large, very alienated group's last public channel to express themselves peacefully. This risks further escalation. This is compounded with the stark contrast to how the protests were handled this summer.

The hope is that they will go back to watching sports, wrestling, nascar, porn, and whatever else these idiots watch. I feel bad that they got scammed by Trump, but they really should do something other than echo chamber themselves into a deadly mob again.

people are straight up calling for murder on that website, it's insane. There's no negotiating. "Let me call for violence on the internet, or I'll go out and actually shoot someone" is nuts. That's not someone you negotiate with, that's a person that belongs into a mental ward. Authority does not need to back down because someone threatens terrorism. And yes before other events are invoked, that goes for all form of…

Are you claiming nobody has ever called for murder on Facebook or Twitter? By your line of reasoning those apps should be taken down too. We know for a fact that Facebook and Twitter have been the direct causes of far more numerous deaths than Parler. How do you reconcile this view?

Things are much less likely to escalate when these groups aren't able to communicate.

Its the opposite.

Suddenly half the population is realizing the cons of centralized platforms. Curious if this moment sparks renewed interest in decentralized tech of yesteryear ie the good ol world wide web.

s/half the population/a little less than a third of 70% of the population

Or maybe about 45% of 70% of the population.

Sources: Pew Research says registered voters are about evenly split between R (29%),D (33%), and independent (34%), and also notes that the independents are pretty evenly split between “leans R” and “leans D” for a total of 44/49% here: https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2020/10/26/what-the-20...

And the Census bureau says about 70% of the population is registered to vote, with about 60% voting in 2016 here: https://www.census.gov/newsroom/stories/election-day.html

(Feel free to go find stats for 2020 for both of those, I can’t be bothered)

Also as a moderator of a Mastodon instance, I can say that this decentralized tech is quite capable of making people STFU, I sure have defederated with a constantly growing list of fediverse nodes full of the exact same kind of shit featured in these Parler screenshots because I just do not wanna talk to anyone like that.

Unfortunately, I think this is only the beginning. The Trump era was just a warm-up.

The only chance in hell this country has of surviving is if Republicans widely condemn Trump's behavior and make an example of other agitators like Rudy Giuliani and Alex Jones who whipped these people into a frenzy. If there are no consequences, they'll only get the message that they can do whatever they want and things will only get worse.

> The only chance in hell this country has of surviving is if Republicans widely condemn Trump's behavior

Trump acted like a clown, but he's hardly the only agitator in this mess. The entirety of 2020 has been a shit show from all sides, and near as I can tell no one is interested in backing down.

Further escalation beyond storming the capitol? Becuase that's what tolerance has resulted in.

Tolerance? Remember when the left taught America it's okay to use violence if it is for the greater good?

> The elite media class of academics, influencers, celebrities, and journalists who make up the #resistence, spent all summer saying "riots are the language of the unheard," as a way of excusing and justifying violence, vandalism, and riots in the streets

Remember “If you don’t like Twitter’s rules, you are perfectly free to make your own platform”? I suppose we are perfectly free to make our own pocket computers now, right?

These platforms exist for the purpose of capturing content that has been “deplatformed”.

>Speak freely and express yourself openly, without fear of being “deplatformed” for your views. Engage with real people, not bots. Parler is people and privacy-focused, and gives you the tools you need to curate your Parler experience.

Parler frontpage.

They have no intention of creating a real alternative to Twitter.

Lets be honest here, It's not like you can't have a conversation on Twitter either if your views are alternative. It's their hateful, harmful and offensive comments that will get them "deplatformed".

If you are a liberal / progressive and your outlook is medium to long-term, this is the last thing you want Apple to do. Denying people their voice makes them more dangerous. Let's give them a means to vent out / express themselves. Violent subgroups / individuals can be addressed, but please don't deny the __entire__ opposition their voice. The last thing you want is for the conservative movement to be hosted on a C…

> It is really time to bridge the divide and come together.

"Fuck your feelings". I could probably count on the fingers of one hand the number of times where the right has suggested "bridging the divide". Instead it's "patriot" this, "traitor" that, and so on.

And all the while any conciliatory efforts are ignored. One side clearly isn't interested in this bridge. But constantly expects the other side to make concessions to them in the name of some hypothetical middle ground that they openly mock even as they do so.

Imagine owning a phone that can only get content approved by Apple and can cancel you for any arbitrary reason. Its like buying a radio that can only listen to democrats approved stations, its ridiculous and yet the fanboys will defend their shitty practices no matter what

You're trying to skate over the difference between good-faith political debate and bad-faith encouragement of violence and sedition.

Diverse dissenting views are fine. Plotting armed violence to overturn a legitimate election result isn't.

If the far-right can't operate without plotting armed violence - and there's plenty of evidence it can't - then it puts itself outside the reach of any free speech arguments.

Not just because its views are abhorrent, but because it would gleefully destroy absolutely all forms of dissenting free speech itself if given the opportunity.
