The only reason Parler is getting banned and Facebook isn't is because Facebook is too big to fail.
Facebook and Twitter have the same amount of questionable content, just better PR and bigger clout.

You're proposing to remove a very large, very alienated group's last public channel to express themselves peacefully. This risks further escalation. This is compounded with the stark contrast to how the protests were handled this summer.

This is a completely flawed premise. The idea that 'if we don't let them talk to each other to organize insurrections, they'll somehow will do something worse' is ridiculous.

#119Thank fucking god. These tech companies were complicit in an incompetent but serious insurrection attempt. Better late than never, but they must have known things were going to get bad. The right and the associated white supremists have far too much freedom to spread disinformation, racism and hatred. I'm sure we'll see free speech absolutists in arms about this, but today is a good day for democracy.
I don't think there's much doubt that social media platform algos increased the flaming the flames over a period of years. What we're talking about here is their role as a means of communication over days/weeks.
If we are talking about their role as a means of communication, where is the rage at Verizon, ATT, T-Mobile, etc.? The is where the argument of repealing Section 230 because of the insurrection breaks down.

#120Instead of going after tech companies I would prefer to see putting more responsibility on the political system. I came to the US in 2000. Back then politics were already bad but now the message is pretty much "The other guys are evil", "anti-american", "racists", "socialist" or whatever. all messaging is designed to put up hard barriers between people that can't be overcome. Social networks certainly amplify things but in the end we need more discipline from political leadership to not constantly incite anger in the population.
With companies censoring more and more information it's pretty much guaranteed that they will also censor information that's inconvenient to them. The internet should be open and stay open.
