Suddenly half the population is realizing the cons of centralized platforms. Curious if this moment sparks renewed interest in decentralized tech of yesteryear ie the good ol world wide web.

Are they though? Half the people here come off as oblivious to the problem.

There's an amusing irony in the downvotes in this thread. The champions of free-speech angry that Apple might ban a platform for speech that ultimately led to an attempted insurrection? These champions of free speech seem to be agressively trying to silence anybody happy about this news.

What was the insurrection? Some protestors got into the Capitol building. Don't make it out like it's more than it is.

Watch this footage: https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/2021/01/08/ash...

It shows men with baseball bats feet from members of congress.

Yah. IMO-- only the most directly dangerous stuff -- incitements to violence-- should be removed. If you chase them out of Twitter, they'll make an even worse echo-chamber. > Their legal cases are rejected. > On the other hand, if what they're asserting is crazy and unsupported by fact, what's the alternative? How is this any different from the entirety of human history? America has gotten along quite fine without a central Ministry of Information directing what people should and should not believe is true. It is especially galling to think that some content moderators in the very narrow slice of society in Bay Area tec…

The difference is the echo chamber effect and the removal of opposing view points from an individual’s “feed”, while simultaneously facing no social pressure to conform to actual not-on-the-web society.

You're proposing to remove a very large, very alienated group's last public channel to express themselves peacefully. This risks further escalation. This is compounded with the stark contrast to how the protests were handled this summer.

s/express themselves peacefully/spread lies and coordinate attacks with impunity/

Parler, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook were definitely used to storm Congress. Snapchat, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook also were definitely used to burn down parts of Minneapolis, Chicago, and LA. Massive Big Tech conglomerates must be busted through antitrust enforcement and Section 230 must be updated to ban predatory algorithms which have inflamed 7 years of sectarian chaos. It's not a free speech issue:…

I’m so done with all of this. It’s time to break them up. Who is “them”? All of them.

Zuckerberg, Pichai, Wojcicki, and Dorsey have failed as guardians of the internet. Split their companies into pieces and let organic conversations happen again. I tire of them profiting off of hate while spamming the world with ugly art of squiggly cartoon people in a phony attempt to paint themselves as anything but evil.

Protestors, armed with guns and pipe bombs carrying zip ties as well. Who were seeking to stop the certification of the electoral college vote. Yes, insurrection.

Are you retarded? Black panther walked into the Capitol wielding guns and nobody called it an insurrection. Gringo coasties are so retarded, ffs.

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

"They" are the racists.
