#2It was known that it would happen because the EU domain has explicit rules about nationality and geographic location of domain owners (like some country level domains also have).
Basically one has to be an EU citizen or to be located in the EU. British citizens and British companies in the UK are neither.

May I register a “.eu” name if I live in Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland?
Not yet, but the EU and the European Economic Area (EEA) have begun discussions with a view to extending the scope of the .eu Top Level Domain to Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway ... Switzerland cannot be included in these talks as is not a member of the EEA.
