I would love to read YouTube’s big reveal on how they are targeting children. It does not take an expert to see it. Just search up any kids shows and wait for the ads to come in. Should kids be targeted by any ads? I don’t know but feel probably they shouldn’t. But even if they should be shown ads I highly question the type of ads I have seen while watching shows with my kids. Honestly I can’t think of a single example ad off the top of my head but while watching clearly kids shows have seen enough that I have often thought “what the hell youtube”. A part of me believes they want the ads to be offensive to the parent so they consider the premium account.

#102This is heartening news. We are finally approaching the moment where addictive social media is handled with the same seriousness with which big tobacco was treated.
It's funny to think that people might look back at how much time and attention people from 2010 to 2020 spent on their device and think how backwards we were. Like how "dumb" past generations were for putting lead in gasoline.
In future, the caricature of our time will be people blindly stumbling around while pressing small hunks of metal and plastic against their faces.

I don't think you need to be Trump or a Trump supporter to find personalized ads offensive and unwelcome. I think there's pretty bipartisan agreement it's getting a little out of hand. For instance, when I was under 21, I often got ads for alcoholic beverages, even though those services knew my exact date of birth. Why was I given those ads? At the time I had no way of learning why.
The example you give seems to be an ad that wasn't sufficiently personalized. Was that also "offensive and unwelcome"?
Everyone should just use uBlock Origin and be done with it.

I've always thought that their algorithms are the biggest problems - when someone else gets to choose what you see. (That's also why I think it's far to go after their common carrier status if they do this.)
It would be better to be able to manage your own feed, things like chronological order, filtering, etc.

Exactly, if you restrict access based on degrees of separation, you're essentially restricting access to information by geography, which is sure to reinforce regional differences and radicalize people further by hiding dissenting opinions
