I think your retrospective is very Dattebayo centric and distorted. Most big fansubbing groups hated CR back in the days when CR started, since CR took their fansunbs to fuel their business. Once CR started to make/pay for their own translations (also hiring translators from some groups in the background) the situation got better, since then a clear, legal path was visible for the community.

I mean, Dattebayo definitely criticized CR at first. But by the time Dattebayo closed shop, they were highly supportive of CR. That's why its important to remember the names of these groups. Do you remember the large-fansub group and/or which anime you're talking about?

Its hard for me to think of a bigger group than Dattebayo back then. Dattebayo covered Naruto and Bleach subs, as well as a bunch of lesser known anime.

Since you know the phrase "horseshoe theory" I'm a bit surprised you don't know that no one actually on the "far left" in USA proposes censorship. Instead it is a particular flavor of centrist identitarians who couldn't care less about freedom or class consciousness. They're just striving for a bit of attention like everyone else. If you accused them of leftism they would probably take offense.

I'm not saying the far left don't have it in them, because obviously they did USSR etc. But that was in that context, in which by some miracle they controlled the murderous tools of a nation-state. In USA they know very well that they're in line for censorship (or whatever, really) immediately behind the pornographers. No one who appears on cable news is part of the "far left", no matter how loudly they shriek.

In the spirit of the internet being past its peak and rapidly getting worse, we are now entering the second serious dark age in human history where the amount of porn available is shrinking. The first was the porn ban of tumblr, where one could find specialized tumblrs with archives spanning thousand of pictures as narrow as for „blonde guys with visible legs on beaches“ or „redhead girls dressed up as clowns sitting on balls“. Reddit is a weak replacement. Who knows how long they will allow porn?

Yes, yes, I know: Won‘t anybody think of the children!

My understanding is YouTube technically doesn't deal with many DMCA take downs. Their reporting system is technically a voluntary system in front of DMCA. Large IP holders are happy to use it because it heavily favors them. Large IP holders also don't have to worry about repercussions for false or incorrect DMCA claims.

Yes, that’s true now, but that really got going after YouTube used the DMCA to beat some copyright lawsuits, most prominently by Viacom.

It became obvious to big copyright owners that they would get more if they played ball with Google instead of fighting them in court.

This is clearly false, they've claimed to be using a lot of technologies to preventively detect these issues. Visa has threatened to destroy not only Pornhub, but the whole parent company now. They'll just shut down Pornhub before destroying their company. Looking forward to the next russian-hosted site. It will surely be better, right?

Neither has for myspace. Until facebook. And now facebook is losing people (luckily for them, a lot have gone to their own instagram). Snapchat was all the rage for a year or two... and now... pretty much silent. Youtube just has a high barrier of entry.... a few more "optimizations", screw up a few more content creator, and a new billion dollar startup will come, and take over where youtube stopped.

To my memory, myspace got left for Facebook because FB provided a utility more along the lines of what people were searching for. I don't remember the FB exodus being driven by a MySpace content clampdown.

Pornhub is bigger and better monetized. They have more to lose. Xvideos would probably catre way less.

There's really no way to prevent this but to abandon privacy/force verification. It's not a problem exclusive to pornhub.
